On Friday, August 28, 2026, at approximately 7:42 p.m., the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office and Dodgeville Police Department responded to Walmart in the City of Dodgeville for a reported theft.
While responding to the area, Iowa County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Nathan Kennicker and his K9 partner, Sam, observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.
During the traffic stop, the male driver exited the vehicle, disregarded lawful commands, retrieved an object from inside the vehicle, and fled on foot.
Additional law enforcement resources responded to assist, including officers from the Dodgeville Police Department, Iowa County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Deputy Benisch and K9 Fenix, and the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team. Once another unit arrived to assist with the traffic stop, Sergeant Kennicker deployed K9 Sam to track the fleeing suspect. Sam tracked the suspect to the parking lot of a nearby business, where the suspect was located hiding inside a dumpster. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
The suspect was identified as Jeffery Raymond Hohmann, 37, of Granton, Wisconsin. Hohmann was out on bond through Dane County. A records check revealed that Hohmann had 10 outstanding warrants, nine open felony cases in Dane County, and four open misdemeanor cases in Columbia County.
Hohmann was transported to the Iowa County Jail on the outstanding warrants and was referred for the following additional charges:
· Resisting or Obstructing an Officer
. Operating While Revoked
. Ignition Interlock Device Violation
. 27 counts of Felony Bail Jumping
. 12 counts of Misdemeanor Bail Jumping
The investigation continued at the
vehicle. Deputy Benisch deployed K9 Fenix to conduct an open-air sniff of the vehicle.
The Dodgeville Police Department subsequently arrested Troy W. Clark, 53, of McFarland, Wisconsin. Clark was also out on bond through Dane County on an open felony case and an open misdemeanor case. He was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and arrested by the Dodgeville Police Department for Felony Bail Jumping and Misdemeanor Bail Jumping.
This incident demonstrates the importance of the strong working relationship between the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office and our municipal law enforcement agencies, as well as the resources available when we work together. Two K9 teams, our Drone Team, deputies, officers, and dispatchers all played a role in bringing this incident to a safe conclusion. It also gave K9 Sam another opportunity to show that he isn’t quite ready to slow down.
Sam’s retirement date is set for December 31, 2026. Until then, he continues to show up for work every day alongside Sergeant Kennicker, ready to do his job.
On Friday night, a suspect ran. Sam went to work.
The track ended at a dumpster, with the suspect in custody.
