Mineral Point goes 5-0 in recent baseball action, move to 17-3 on the season

The Mineral Point baseball team remains undefeated in May and within the past week have won five straight games. It all started on Friday afternoon.

A four-run fourth inning powered Mineral Point past Boscobel 5-2 Friday at Ted Evans Field.

Trailing by one in the bottom of the fourth, Mineral Point sparked a rally when leadoff hitter Brett Bossert reached on an error and moved to second after Evan Kearns was hit by a pitch. Cole Ripp laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners, then Hudson Schroeder reached on an infield error that brought Bossert home.

Boscobel intentionally walked Brylen Lee to load the bases. With two outs after Elliot Kite struck out, Conner Rolli singled to right, scoring two runs. Adam Cody then singled home a run and a 4-1 lead at the end of the inning.

Boscobel scored another run in the sixth inning making it 4-2, and the Pointers answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning on a pair of Boscobel errors.

Hudson Schroeder got the win for the Pointers as he pitched 4.2 innings allowing three hits, one run, he struck out six and walked two. Cole Ripp pitched the final 2.1 innings allowing two hits, one run, he struck out two and walked one.

Boscobel out hit Mineral Point 5 to 4. Cody, Kearns, Lee, and Rolli each had one hit for the Pointers.

On Saturday, Mineral Point hosted Brodhead in a double header and they swept the Cardinals by winning the first game 9-2, and despite being outhit 13-8, the Pointers won the second game 7-6 ..

The Pointers were already ahead 1- 0 when in the third inning Evan Kearns hit a two-run home run to increase their lead to 3-0. In the fourth inning they made it 4-0 when Rolli reached first on an error which scored Lee from third base.

Brodhead scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning cutting the lead down to 4-2, but Mineral Point answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, and two more insurance runs in the sixth inning for the final score of 9-2.

Brylen Lee picked up the win for the Pointers. He pitched four strong innings allowing two hits, no runs, he struck out four and walked two. Elliot Kite finished on the mound pitching three innings, allowing three hits, two runs, he struck out four and walked one.

At the plate, Finley was 2×3 and Kearns 2×4 at the plate. Bossert, Kearns, Lee, and Schroeder each had two RBIs. Mineral Point turned three double plays in the game.

In the second game, Brodhead served as the home team in a makeup of an earlier rainout, and the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

In the top half of the third inning, Kite led off and doubled for Mineral Point and scored on Rolli’s single tying the game at 1-1. Adam Cody reached base on an error and after a balk, both Cody and Rolli advanced to second and third, respectively. After Rolli was called out trying to steal home, Cody advanced to third on his attempt, and he scored on another balk by Brodhead’s Chase Bauman making it 2-1. Two batters later, Kearns drove home Bossert with a double to left field.

Brodhead plated a run in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2, then went ahead 5-3 with three more runs in the fifth. But Mineral Point responded with four runs in the sixth. After Schroeder reached on an error and Kite was hit by a pitch, Rolli dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move them up, and Cody’s single drove in both runs to tie the game.

After Finley walked to put runners on first and second base, a double steal advanced both runners to second and third. Cody then scored on a passed ball and Finley scored on Bossert’s ground ball out.

Brodhead mounted a threat in the bottom of the seventh as Braylon Strehlow reached on an error and moved to second on Sam Searls’ single. Strehlow went to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a balk by Adam Cody, but Cody induced a popout from Dylan Ross to end it and seal Mineral Point’s 7-6 win.

Four Mineral Point pitchers shared time on the mound in this game, Bossert, Kearns, Rolli, and Cody. Together they allowed thirteen hits, six runs, five strikeouts, and five walks. At the plate Schroeder led Mineral Point going 2×4 at the plate. Will Searls led Brodhead going 3×4 at the plate.

On Monday, the Pointers traveled to Belleville and won 12-5. Belleville pitching walked six batters and as a team they committed 8 errors to help assist Mineral Point to victory. The Pointers scored two runs in the first inning on Brylen Lee’s single which scored two runs.

Brett Bossert’s single in the second inning brought home a run. And the Pointers scored three runs in the third. Lee reached base on an error and scored on Hudson Schroeder’s double. With bases loaded, two Belleville walks brought in two more runs.

Belleville scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Mineral Point answered in the top of the fifth when after two hits by Connor Rolli and Grady Finley, three errors by Belleville allowed three more runs to score in the inning as the Pointers would go on to win it 12-5.

Cole Ripp got the win for Mineral Point on the mound pitching five innings allowing eight hits, five runs, he struck out six and walked two. Elliot Kite pitched two innings allowing one hit, no runs, he struck out two and walked two.

At the plate, Finley, Bossert and Lee each had two hits to pace the Pointers. As a team they collected eleven hits.

On Tuesday, Mineral Point traveled to Fennimore and in a wild finish on a breezy day scored fourteen runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Eagles 25-12. Combined the teams connected on thirty-six hits. Brett Bossert had four hits and eight RBIs, four of those coming in the seventh inning hitting an inside-thepark grand slam to help elevate the Pointers.

Fennimore went up early scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first inning, but Mineral Point responded scoring seven runs in the second and two runs in the third to take a 9-2 lead. Bossert tripled in the second inning to score two runs, and he scored on a wild pitch to help ignite the Pointers.

But Fennimore answered scoring eight unanswered runs over the next three innings while shutting down the Pointers and taking a 10-9 lead going into the top of the sixth inning. Mineral Point scored two runs to take the lead 11-10. With one out, Adam Cody singled and advanced to second base on Grady Finley’s single. Bossert loaded the bases with an infield hit. Cody tied the game on a passed ball. Cole Ripp’s fielder’s choice scored Finley giving the Pointers the lead.

Brylen Lee pitched a one, two, three inning in the bottom of the sixth inning before the Pointers erupted for fourteen runs in the top of the seventh. The Pointers scored nine runs before recording an out. Six singles, a double, two walks and a Fennimore error contributed to those runs.

With one out and no one on base, Kite single, Cody walked, Finley singled, Bossert added all the insurance they would need with a grand slam homer. Mineral Point avenged their earlier 5-2 loss to Fennimore back in April.

Lee got the win for the Pointers pitching two innings, allowing four hits, two runs, he struck out three and walked none. Hudson Schroeder started the game and pitched three innings allowing four runs on four hits, he struck out three and walked two. Cody pitched middle relief going two innings and allowing seven hits, six runs, he struck out three and walked two.

Offensively, the Pointers connected on twenty-one hits. Bossert had four, Schroeder and Rolli each had three hits, Cody, Finley, Kearns, Lee, Schroeder, and Kite each had two hits.

The Pointers are now 17-3 for the season. Their next upcoming games include at Darlington on Friday, May 15, at Dodgeville on Monday, May 18, at Riverdale on Tuesday, 19, and at Southwestern on Thursday, May 21.
