In SWAL baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Ted Evans Field in Mineral Point, The Pointers survived a late rally in the seventh inning to defeat Iowa-Grant 4-2.
In the bottom of the first inning, Adam Cody scored from third on a wild pitch by Everett Zimmer. The Pointers added two more runs in the fourth: Brylen Lee singled and advanced to third on a Hudson Schroeder single before being caught stealing home. With runners at the corners, Connor Rolli singled in Schroeder, and Adam Cody doubled to bring in Rolli, giving the Pointers a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, with two outs and bases loaded, Zimmer walked Schroeder to score the last Pointer run of the game.
In the top of the seventh, Iowa- Grant made a charge. Lee replaced Cody who pitched six solid innings for Mineral Point. Lee got Will Fulton to ground out for the first out. He then walked Myles Pettit and allowed a single by Liam Hildreth. Panther Brock Hinderman then lined a single to left field scoring both runners. With two outs and runners on first and second, Lee got Maddox Fisher to ground out for the 4-2 win.
Cody got the win for Mineral Point pitching six innings allowing four hits, no runs, and striking out six with no walks. Lee pitched the seventh, allowing two hits, two runs and walked one. Mineral Point totaled 7 hits led by Cody who went 2×3 with an RBI and a run scored. The Pointers committed four errors.
Zimmer pitched five innings allowing seven hits, four runs, two of those earned, he walked four and struck out 2 in the loss for the Panthers. The Panthers had six hits in the contest led by Treyton Leoffelholz who went 2×3 at the plate. The Panthers committed three errors.
In the SWAL conference, Mineral Point remains in first place with an 8-1 record, 12-3 overall. Iowa Grant is now 4-4 in conference, 9-4 overall. Iowa-Grant will next host Potosi on Thursday, May 7 and travel to Darlington Friday, May 8. Mineral Point will host Boscobel on Friday, May 8, and host a doubleheader Saturday against Brodhead starting at 10:00 a.m.
