Boys basketball in Southwest Wisconsin is in a good place.
Barneveld won its fourth straight Six Rivers East title, the Regional title and got within one game of the Kohl Center before losing to Sheboygan Lutheran.
Dodgeville shared the SWC crown with Lancaster and Platteville.
Mineral Point, bumped up a division because of “competitive equity,” was seeded number one in the playoffs.
Pecatonica totaled 17 wins, their best finish in several seasons.
Iowa-Grant had its best season in several years and hosted the first round of the postseason, beat Cuba City for the third time and got to the second round.
River Valley knocked off Platteville in its final game of the regular season to help send the SWC into their triple tie.
Highland faced numbers problems but still competed hard every play.
It was an exciting year and a fun one to cover.
When it came to coaching, Barneveld’s Tyler Sullivan and Dodgeville’s Matt McGraw earned coach of the year honors in their conferences.
And, Bret McGraw took over the Mineral Point program, replacing one of the most successful coaches in Wisconsin basketball history in Dan Burreson and the Pointers maintained their basketball excellence.
As for players, Pec’s Griffin Noll earned first team all-state in Division 5 with Barneveld’s Hunter Larson an honorable mention choice.
Pointer Drew Aschliman was named honorable mention all-state in Division 3.

BARNEVELD Golden Eagles
Hunter Larson
Senior 6’1″ Guard
Honors:
- Co-Player of the Year Six Rivers East
- First Team All Conference
- Honorable mention all-state D5
Statistics:
- 19 PPG
- 6 Reb/PG
- 4 Ast/PG
- Shot 62% from field, 38% from 3, 85% from FT
Coach Tyler Sullivan-
Hunter showed this year why he was so deserving of player of the year in our conference. He has the ability to score at all levels on the floor with his ability to shoot and explode to the basket. He really turned himself into a complete player this year with the intensity he played with defensively. He single handedly blew some games open for us this season with his ability to shoot the 3. Has had a high of 29 points three times, 10 or more games over 20 points, and 5 -3’s in 3 different games.
Judson Poad
Senior 6’4″ Guard/Forward
Honors:
- Second Team All Conference Six Rivers East
Statistics:
- 13 PPG
- 5 Reb/PG
- Shot 60% from the field and 42% from 3
Coach Tyler Sullivan-
Jud is a long/athletic kid who really found his groove this year. He plays with a ton of passion, and his ability to score inside out is a matchup problem for a lot of teams. He is able to get by bigger guys on the perimeter and attack the basket, and is able to shoot over smaller defenders from 3. Jud also really improved on the defensive end, and rebounded the ball hard for us this year. Had multiple 20 point games this year, and four games with 3-3’s or more. Jud was a difference maker for us all year!
Cooper Shipman
Senior 6’1″ Guard
Honors:
- Honorable Mention All Conference Six Rivers East
Statistics:
- 7 PPG
- 6 Ast/PG
- 5 Reb/PG
- 3 Stl/PG
Coach Tyler Sullivan-
Cooper was our Captain America this year. His stats may not jump off the page at you, but he just does everything you need him to do to help us win games. He is a very capable scorer, but his natural instinct is to find the open guy, and is an excellent passer. Cooper got tasked all season with guarding the other teams best player, and he exceeded my expectations. He is a hard nosed kid, a long/smart defender who locked down some really good players all year long. Wouldn’t be where we are at without Coop.
Ty Thousand
Senior 6’2″ Guard/Forward
Honors:
- Honorable Mention All Conference Six Rivers East
Statistics:
- 8 PPG
- 5 Reb/PG
- Shot 43% from 3
Coach Tyler Sullivan-
Ty is pound for pound our most athletic kid, and is another kid who is a big matchup problem for a lot of teams. Ty’s ability to explode to the rim and finish in different ways against size has been his biggest strength, but on the flip side of that he is also shooting our best percentage from 3. Ty also is a very aggressive defender who can guard big or small. Has had 10 or more games scoring in double digits, and had numerous moments throughout the year where he changed the game for us to get big wins!
Konnor Jasinski
Senior 5’11” Guard
Honors:
- Honorable Mention All Conference Six Rivers East
Statistics:
- 7 PPG
- 4 Ast/PG
- 2 Stl/PG
- Shot 35% from 3
Coach Tyler Sullivan-
I still never forget to this day, a former coach I used to coach under, Jack Capelle, always said “you are only as good as your point guard”. Man was that the truth this year. Konnor was a calming, reliable presence all year running the point for us. He knew when we needed him to score, and he knew how to distribute the ball. Aggressive scorer going to the basket, great finisher for a guard, and had 7 double digit scoring outings for us. Always could count on him on the defensive side of the ball as well, pressuring the other guards up the floor.
Mason Durst
Sophomore 6’6″ Forward
Honors:
- Second Team All Conference Six Rivers East
Statistics:
- 12 PPG
- 8 Reb/PG
- 3 Blks/PG
Coach Tyler Sullivan-
I am really glad I get to have Mason around for two more seasons! He really had to mature and grow up in a hurry for us this year, and he did just that! I knew coming into the season that he was going to be a factor for us this year, and he turned into a sixth man that I think any team would have loved to have start for them. This was noticed by our conference, as he was voted Second Team All Conference. Mason is a special talent for his size: He can shoot it from the perimeter, attack off the bounce, has a long wing span to get deflections/steals/blocks on defense, and rebounds the ball really well. He has a knack for being around the ball and always seems to find himself in the right spot offensively and defensively. Mason has had multiple games scoring over 20 pts, with a high of 30 one time.
MINERAL POINT Pointers
Drew Aschliman
Senior 6’3″ Guard
Honors:
- First Team All-Conference
- Finished career with 1070 points
- Honorable Mention all state D3
Statistics:
- 18.6 ppg
- 7.5 rpg
Coach Bret McGraw-
“Drew is one of the most clutch players I have ever coached. The moment was never too big for him, and it seemed like the bigger the moment the better he played. Drew consistently was able to score even when teams game-planned to try and stop him. In Drew’s three years on varsity, teams he played on won a total 75 games including two trips to State. His memorable game-winning put-back basket in the State Championship game, proved to be the difference in helping the Pointers claim the first State Title in program history. As a junior, Drew averaged 13 ppg, while also playing point guard. Drew became a great leader for our team, and a major reason why we were able to have the kind of year we did.”
Keaton Dempsey
Senior 6’1″ Guard
Honors:
- First Team All-Conference
Statistics:
- 17.5 ppg
- 5 rpg
Coach Bret McGraw-
“Keaton is a player that defines how far hard work can take you. Keaton dramatically improved every year in our program. He played the game with relentless energy every time he set foot on the court. Keaton may have the quickest first step of any player to come through our program. Keaton was a very competitive player who gave everything he had when he played. As a junior, Keaton averaged eight ppg as the sixth man on the team that went 27-2 and made it to State. Keaton was able to score a lot of different ways, and his athleticism on defense always created a lot of problems for opposing teams, especially in the 1-3-1.”
Aiden Patterson
Sophomore 6’2″ Guard
Honors:
- Honorable Mention All-Conference
Statistics:
- 8 ppg
- 4 rpg
- 37% 3pt FG
Coach Bret McGraw-
“Aiden became a consistent third scorer for us after he moved into the starting lineup. He was a reliable outside threat and made teams have to account for him in their scouting report. Aiden is a smart player who really understood what we were trying to do as a team. He has a bright future and if he works at it can become an outstanding player for the Pointers.”

Grant Rickard

Statistics:
- 11 ppg
- 5.2 rpg
- 2.7 apg
Coach Shawn Dailey-
Grant had some huge games for us this season and was the reason we were able to close them out to get the win. He was a matchup nightmare for smaller defenders down low and for bigger defenders out high. When Grant played at a high level we were tough to beat. (continued on next page)
Landon Friesen

Coach Shawn Dailey-
Landon was our Defensive Stopper. He always was tasked with guarding the team’s best players. He held many of them way under their season’s average. Landon was our best offensive rebounder on the team. He has the best attitude around and is always putting in extra work to be better.

PECATONICA Vikings
Griffin Noll
Junior 6’3″ Guard
Honors:
- Six Rivers East Co-Player of the Year
- First team All Conference
- Academic All-State
- First Team All-State D5
Statistics:
- 25.6 ppg
- 5.3 rpg
- 4 apg
- 2 stl.
Coach Scott Noll-
Griffin had a very good year for Pecatonica, leading the Six Rivers East in scoring (25.6) and I believe was number 4 in the state for all of D5.
His stats speak for themselves, the area where I think he had the most growth was in his leadership skills. We found Griffin being an extension of the coaching staff on the floor, often getting our team in successful positions and leading us to victories.
We improved this season’s win total from a year ago and had 17 victories. Griffin’s growth as a player and a leader has spread and helped us build a positive culture here in PEC that will be sustainable.
Luke Leonard
Junior 6’1″ Forward
Honors:
- Six Rivers East Second Team All Conference
- Academic All-State
Statistics:
- 10.6 ppg.

Coach Scott Noll-
Luke almost doubled his scoring average from last year. Luke is a coach’s dream. You give him the tools and he goes to work. Always has a positive mindset and is willing to help others along the way.
Luke is often one of the first on the floor and one of the last to leave. There is no way this team wins 17 games this season without Luke. There is no doubt that next season will be even better! I can say this because Luke won’t let us drop our standards as he is one of the leaders that make our culture go and grow. Any coach would be proud to have Luke Leonard on their team!
