I heard my first red-winged blackbird yesterday-the Midwestern harbinger of spring. The sound reminded me that winter does not in fact live on forever. Hope is popping through the ground in the form of green shoots, and the birds are filling the trees with renewed energy and song. After months of gray skies and frozen ground, these small signs bring a welcome sense of renewal. To borrow the hopeful words of Charlotte Bronte, “Spring drew on … and a greenness grew over those brown beds, which freshening daily, suggested the thought that Hope traversed them at night, and left each morning brighter traces of her steps.”
