With flags waving, patriotic bunting adorning downtown streets, homemade pie, ice cream and a fireworks display lighting up the night sky, Mineral Point’s Fourth of July celebration remains one of the community’s most cherished traditions.

This year’s festivities carry special significance as the nation marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Residents and visitors alike are expected to gather on Saturday, July 4, for a full day of activities honoring both local heritage and American history.

The annual celebration is organized by the Mineral Point Chamber of Commerce with support from sponsors, volunteers and community participants. Many former residents return each year to reconnect with friends and family while taking part in one of the hometown’s largest annual events.

The day begins with the Gettin’ the Lead Out Run/Walk at 8 a.m., offering participants a choice of twoor five-mile courses through the city.

At 11 a.m., the community parade will make its way down High Street, featuring floats, marching bands and plenty of candy for children lining the route. Parade entries will compete for the coveted Golden Pasty Award, presented to the most creative entry with a connection to Mineral Point. Organizers say bonus points will be awarded to entries that incorporate the theme of America’s 250th anniversary.

Following the parade, a pulled pork meal will be served at Water Tower Park from noon until sold out. Live music by Al Bauman and crew will provide entertainment throughout the afternoon.

Sports enthusiasts can take part in a pickleball tournament beginning at 2 p.m. at Soldiers Memorial Park. Tournament proceeds will support the development of new pickleball courts in the community.

The evening’s activities begin at 6 p.m. with the Kiwanis Ice Cream and Pie Social at Soldiers Memorial Park. The Mineral Point City Band will perform a concert starting at 6:45 p.m.

The celebration concludes at dusk with a fireworks display. High Street will be closed to traffic to provide spectators with prime viewing opportunities.

As Mineral Point joins communities across the nation in commemorating America’s semiquincentennial, organizers anticipate another memorable Independence Day filled with tradition, community spirit and patriotic pride.
