LIAM STUMPF, a former Mineral Point High School athlete, picked up the save in his final outing for C th
Central Michigan University (CMU) baseball team last week.
Stumpf, a 6- O redshirt senior pitcher, held the University of Massachusetts at bay for the last four innings of a 14- 10 victory over the Minutemen.
Stumpf allowed one earned run on five hits and three walks to go along with his one strikeout.
He faced 20 batters and threw 78 pitches to earn his second save this season, but it did not come without a little late-game drama.
UMass had the bases loaded with two outs before Stumpf got the last batter to line out to the shortstop.
“He’s one of the best leaders and teammates we’ve had here. He’s had his ups and downs, but he’s also had some really big moments for us in a Chippewa uniform,” CMU head coach Jake Sabol said of Stumpf. “I’m proud of him. This was just a fitting end for him to be on the mound when we finished this one up for his last game.”
The win allowed the Chippewas to take the series, 2-1 in their first visit to Amherst, Mass., and Earl Lorden Field.
The 2026 curtain closes on CMU with an overall record of 24-29 and 13-20 against MAC opponents.
AIDEN FISHNICK, a former Barneveld High School athlete, was part of a UW-Milwaukee baseball team victory week.
Fishnick, a 6- 2 redshirt junior pitcher, tossed one inning of relief 4 during an 11- inning game against Oakland University (Mich) that the Panthers won, 12-11.
He was on the bump in the seventh inning where he allowed an earned run on a hit, two walks, and a hit batter.
Fishnick threw 29 pitches to seven batters before the inning was over.
UW-M not only won the series opener, but the next two games against the visiting Golden Grizzlies which allowed the Panthers to claim the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League Tournament in Dayton, Oh.
UW-M (22-31, 14-10) plays third seeded Northern Kentucky at Nischwitz Stadium on Thursday morning. LEYTEN BOWERS, a former Mineral Point High School athlete, could not be kept off the bases for the UW- Whitewater baseball team last week. Bowers, a 6-0 senior INF, reached base 13 times in four games of the NCAA Regional the Warhawks hosted at Prucha Field.
UW-W posted a 2-2 record; falling 8-7 to Bethany Lutheran College (Minn) in both contests.
Bowers, a recent first-team all- WIAC selection, tallied five hits, six walks, a fielder’s choice, was hit by a pitch, and scored three runs.
He had at least one run batted in (RBI) in each game, finishing the week with six.
Bowers’s last RBI ignited a furious rally by the Warhawks in the eighth inning in the last game against BLC.
Trailing 6-1, he hammered a 1-1 pitch over the right field fence that was the first of three long balls in the inning for the Warhawks.
DOM MCVAY, a former Mineral Point High School athlete, could be found on the bases for the Warhawks just as frequently as Bowers.
McVay, a 5-9 junior OF, had a pair of two-hit games to accompany four fielder’s choices, a walk, and getting hit by a pitch.
He picked up three RBI while crossing the plate three times himself.
McVay, an honorable mention all- WIAC selection, was part of the home run barrage in the final game as well, sending the second pitch over the left field fence to score three runs, making the score 6-5.
One batter later, the Warhawks tied the game with their last home run of the inning, and eventually took a brief 7-6 lead when the inning was over.
ETHAN WICKMAN, a former River Valley High School athlete, appeared in three of the four games for the Warhawks.
Wickman, a 6-1 junior pitcher, was on the bump a total of 3.0 innings against BLC and Macalester College (Minn).
He was tagged with his only loss of the season in the final game of the season when the Vikings prevailed, 8-7, in the bottom of the 11th with a sac fly.
In his second outing against the Vikings, he faced five batters in .2 innings of work, allowing three hits and the earned run.
For the week, Wickman threw 51 pitches to 17 batters that produced the one run on six hits, two walks, and a wild pitch while striking out a pair as well.
UW-W finishes the season 43-6, including a spotless 28-0 record in WIAC play.
LEXIE WEIER, a former Mount Horeb athlete from Mineral Point, was in action for the UW-W women’s track team last week.
Weier, a senior horizontal jump specialist, finished 11th out of 15 athletes in the triple jump at the UW-La Crosse Final Qualifier.
Her best effort on the day was 36 feet 7.5 inches (11.16m).
Weier was the only Warhawk in the event.
UW-W will send qualifying athletes to the NCAA Division III championships beginning Thursday in La Crosse.
BRYN MEYER, a former Barneveld High School athlete, competed for the Loras College (Ia) women’s track team last week. Meyers, freshman a sprinter/jumper, was among the hundreds of athletes at the Augustana Midwest Twilight Qualifier in Rock Island, Ill.
She returned home after placing 21st in the 200m with a time of 26.11 and 25th in the 100m in 12.87. Loras will send athletes to the NCAA III finale in La Crosse this week.
GRADY GORGEN, a former Mineral Point High School athlete, was busy for the New York Boulders last week.
Gorgen, a 6-3 pitcher, made four appearances for the Boulders throwing a total of 4.0 innings against a pair of opponents.
He faced a total of 19 batters, allowing three earned runs on five hits and a walk.
He fired 66 pitches, with 51 being strikes, and fanned three batters.
New York (7-2) plays Ottawa and the Trois Rivieres Aigles this week.
JAMESON JOHNSON, a former Pecatonica High School athlete, had his season on the Rock Valley College (III) baseball team come to an end last week.
Johsnon, a 6-2 sophomore UTL, and the Golden Eagles dropped its two games in the Region 4 tournament, 11-4 to Kankakee Community College (III) and 4-3 to Bryant & Stratton College.
Jameson batted a collective 2-for- 7 with a pair of walks.
RVC finishes the year with a 36-18 record.
MCKENZIE KRUSE, a former River Valley High School athlete, posted a top-five performance for the UW-Eau Claire women’s track team last week.
Kruse, a sophomore sprinter/hurdler, finished fifth in the 400m hurdles at the UW-L Final Qualifier with a time of 1:02.38.
UW-EC returns to La Crosse this week for the national championships as Kruse and the 4×400 relay team has the ninth-fastest qualifying time.
