Family honors immigrant ancestors

In the mid-1880’s times were not good in Cornwall, in the West Country of Great Britain. News of the rich mining and land owning opportunities in Wisconsin were heard, and answered by many who left everything they ever knew, to come to a place they had never seen.

In July 1853, William Painter and his wife and two children arrived in Mineral Point, Though William had been a miner in Cornwall, in Wisconsin he bought land from the government and farmed in the Yellowstone neighborhood of Fayette Township. There, he built a Cornish style house of stone and raised their children to which seven more were added. The land was in the family for more than 100 years.

Every June, Paynter family members gather for their reunion, which in 2026, will be held Sunday, June 28 at noon, at Riverside Park Shelter behind Piggly Wiggly, in Darlington.
