A dozen Golden Eagles saw extensive playing time in the WIAA Division 5 Regional opener Tuesday night.
Barneveld eased to an 84-29 win over Black Hawk, holding the Warriors under 20 points each half.
Judson Poad led the Eagles with 25 points, as the senior helped his team move to the next round when they host a tough and long Fall River team Friday. Fall River outlasted Argyle to open their post season.
Hunter Larson drove home 13 points and Konnor Jasinski added 12. Nine Eagles achieved he scoring column.
Cooper Baumgartner led the Warriors with 12.
For coach Tyler Sullivan and the Eagles it was a great to what is hoped to be a long post season.
“This absolutely my favorite time of the year, and I think tonight our basketball team showed it is theirs as well,” said Sullivan “The season can sometimes get long and grueling for everyone involved, but when March hits it’s fun to re-focus and see where you stack up.”
It was tough to start the post season against a familiar team.
“Seeing a conference rival is never ideal right away, but man did our guys come ready to play tonight,” noted Sullivan. “From the tip we were engaged defensively and shared the ball extremely well. Our pressure created quick offense for us early, and when they were able to get their defense set, we did a great job of moving the ball, cutting and finding the open guy.”
“This is such a fun group to coach, as it’s a different guy every night offensively, but everyone wants to get after it defensively,” Sullivan said. Not to be overlooked is the play off the bench in the “next man up” approach.
“Our depth off the bench is just as eager to get into defensive and are just as capable of scoring the basketball too,” Sullivan said ..
“Obviously every game adds a little more stress and pressure the further you go, but I was very pleased with how our guys came and played tonight,” summed up Sullivan. “They guaranteed themselves one more game and I am most excited about that for them on Friday.”
