Dodge-Point secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Galena this week, proving teamwork is the hallmark of this year’s varsity roster. Despite a physical battle and a key injury, United held firm to claim a shutout win.
The game’s decisive offensive moment came courtesy of Mya Marklein, who found the back of the net off an assist from Abilene Bartz. While Marklein’s goal provided the lead, United’s offensive pressure was relentless throughout, racking up a total of 14 shots on goal.
Goalkeeper Lucy Paynter earned her first shutout of the season, anchored by a “highlight reel” save that silenced the Galena sidelines.
“I really thought it was going in,” Coach Andy Weber remarked on the save.
The backline was equally heroic. When United lost standout defender Lily Fox to an injury late in the first half, the team refused to fold. Ella Wilson made an epic goal-line save to preserve the lead, ensuring the shutout remained intact.
The Dodge-Point midfield controlled the center of the pitch for the majority of the game, stifling Galena’s transition play and creating constant opportunities for the forwards. “This was a full team effort win,” said Coach Weber. “We knew coming in it was going to be a close match. Galena is a scrappy team, and they proved it. Everyone stepped up to contribute to the win, and we played to the whistle.”
Coach Andy noted that the team’s chemistry continues to build. “Offensively we generated some great opportunities, and I love how we are getting stronger every game.”
United look to carry this momentum forward as they prepare for their next challenge on the road in Prairie du Chien.
