Change is Not Always a Good Thing

Dear Editor,

“What’s wrong with you? You can’t accept change.”

I’ve heard this question/statement directed at me and others who oppose Industrial Wind Turbine development in the Driftless Region.

It begs the question … is change ALWAYS good?

Yesterday I walked into the Kwik Trip and a man let the door fly in my face. I’ve noticed this a lot lately. Men used to hold doors for women. It was a sign that they respected and honored them. I’m noticing (in general) that men don’t do this anymore. Call me old-fashioned, call me “behind the times,” call me whatever you would like to, but I don’t want change like this. Change is not always a good thing. Sometimes change means that we let go of things that are important, things of value, things that should be cherished.

Change is not always a good thing. If Michael Goff and Pattern Energy have their way, change will take place in this beautiful Driftless Region that we call home. IWT’s will tower over the landscape, changing it forever. We will never go back to the way that things were. We will never be able to gain back the loveliness of this dear place once these BEHEMOTHS are injected into the precious soil that we love. That is a fact.

Is this a change that we want? Or a change that is negative?

I reject negative change, and that is why I fight. That is why many, many voices join this fight.

I embrace change when it is good. But I will never embrace change that harms, destroys, or devalues a person, object, parcel of land, or anything else that God has created. I reject that change. We all should.
