Mother Nature was a day off this past week with her severe thunderstorms! For the past three Wednesdays, it has been a time for severe thunderstorms or just rain. But this past week it came on Thursday that the severe weather hit! That cancelled the Knights’ Home Talent baseball game with Cazenovia. Due to their team’s long drive from near La Crosse, it was called off early in the afternoon.

We had a few notes come with subscription renewals recently. The first was from Jane (Olson) Hanson of Madison. She graduated with brother Pat from DHS in 1963. She said, “Pat, Mike & Staff: “Thank you for the great job you do. I look forward to the Chronicle every week! Take Care! Jane (Olson) Hanson”
Next was one from Amanda Gardner of Dodgeville for the subscription of Richie Meudt on Bellmawr, New Jersey. She said: “Hi Mike & Pat: “He celebrates his birthday with the Country even though he is not 250 years old! The subscription is his way of staying in touch! Thanks – Ron and Amanda Gardner.”
The final one is from longtime subscriber Margaret Disrud, formerly Disrud Cheese Factory Dodgeville/Ridgeway, now in the Mineral Point Care Center. She said: “Hi Mike & Pat: I guess I missed the deadline for my extra month, but renew my paper another year. Enjoy your Saturday morning trips and all the other news. Keep up the good work, Margaret Disrud.”

I was browsing FACEBOOK the other day and came upon a Major League baseball game between the San Francisco Giants and Milwaukees Braves in 1963. In that game, Giants’ pitcher Juan Marichal threw 227 pitches and Braves’ pitcher Warren Spahn threw 201. You will never see those numbers again. These days, a pitcher may throw 100 pitches or a little more, but many only throw 60-80! In fact, Spahn one season won 23 games and completed 27 games!

Don’t miss this celebration – Dodgeville will be the site of the 40th Farmers Appreciation Day July 11-12. Saturday evening, it’s “Sip n Savor” at Harris Park from 5-dusk, put on by the Upland Hills Health Foundation. A huge fireworks display will take place at Harris Park at dusk. Then Sunday will be the parade through downtown Dodgeville beginning at 11:00 a.m. Events following wil be at the Iowa County Courthouse Parking Lot, just outside of the Dodgeville Chronicle office. There will be food, music, awards, pedal tractor pull, petting zoo, Farmers Market and more. Don’t forget your Dodgeville Lions Club cheese curs!

When the Farmers Appreciation Day ends at 3:00 p.m., another Dodgeville event begins – Town Square. That’s held for two weeks on East Merrimac Street with it being blocked off between the Red Room Bar & Restaurant and Bob’s Bitchin BBQ. There are a lot of events planned for those days. With it being Saturday, July 4th we decided to forgo Saturday morning breakfast. Potsie and Tom were gone camping and I had to be at the Mineral Point Historic Run at 8:00 a.m. That left Bob, Terry and possibly Royce – so we decided to cancel. I had to be back for the Knights Home Talent game with Hollandale by 11:00, then go back to Mineral Point that evening for the Ice Cream Social and Mineral Point City Band performance prior to the fireworks. It was a busy day! Next week is up in the air because of Farmers Appreciation Day stuff, but I will have a good report because we all have to catch up on what happened over the 4th!

My Special Day this week falls on yesterday, Wednesday, July 8. It’s “Coca- Cola Day”.
