Along The Ad Routes

We received a note with a renewal for the Dodgeville Chronicle from an “old” friend who was one of the originators of Saturday morning breakfast – Dewey Christoph. He lived here for quite a few years before moving back to his roots in Indiana and got himself hitched! Dewey wrote: “Enclosed is my renewal payment for the Chronicle. We recently purchased a bird and the paper makes great lining for the bottom of the cage! But seriously, now that I live in Indiana, it’s a great way to keep up on the news around Dodgeville, my former home area. I know this will give you a big head, but the first thing I usually search for in each new Chronicle issue is “Around the Ad Routes.” I enjoy keeping track of my former breakfast buddies and their newest breakfast location. To Mike and Pat and all the Dodgeville Chronicle staff – keep up the good work! And, Mike say hello to the breakfast buddies!”

Next Thursday, May 14 is the first of the summer’s “Cruizin the Courthouse” car show, formerly Cars ‘n Coffee. Remember it’s now the 2nd Thursday of the month through October and not the 2nd Saturday! It will now run from 5:00 p.m. until dusk.

I didn’t get to go to breakfast with the guys Saturday. This happens once a year because the Dodgeville Junior Varsity Baseball team hosts a 4-team tournament with games held at both Centennial Park and the High School Field at the Middle School. They begin at 8:30 in the morning, so that makes it pretty tough for me to get to breakfast even if it’s in town. It’s also Dodgeville’s Prom, so that makes it even tougher to find help and sometimes players.

I got a lot of things ready for the concession stand at both fields Friday night, but Saturday morning, as early as 6:00, I was at Centennial Park putting the finishing touches on everything there for the workers that were coming in. Since Dodgeville played at Centennial the first game and hopefully the second one two (winner/loser), I had to man the other field. There is no permanent concession stand there, so I had to bring out the refrigerators, tables plus all of the utensils, candy, chips and food. I had things out and ready to go by the time the first game started. It was very cold throughout the day with temperatures starting at around 35 degrees and getting above 50! Other than being very cold, I survived the day. But, it was a lot harder and more tiring taking everything down and putting it away than it was first thing in the morning when I set it up!

Anyway, back to Saturday morning breakfast. It was Bob, Terry, Tom, Dave and Royce all going to The Golden Eagle Bar and Grill in Barneveld. Bob said they talked about a lot of things, but Sunday he couldn’t remember what! He said he forgot the waitress’ name, but that she only worked there every other Saturday! He said the food was good, as usual and that a lot of the same people who are usually there on the Saturdays we make it were there again. Besides me being gone, we ware missing Potsie!

Last Saturday was a busy time around the area as there were Proms in Dodgeville, Highland, Iowa-Grant and Mineral Point. I’ll bet the restaurants in the area and Madison were pretty busy

For my special day this week, I’m going to back up one day to Wednesday (May 6) because it’s a day that fits me well. It’s “The Great American Grump Out Day!” It is a 24-hour challenge to stop complaining, frowning, and acting grumpy. Created to reduce stress and improve well-being, it encourages replacing negative, “sourpuss” behavior with humor, kindness, and positivity to improve mental and physical health. It’s a day to focus on humor and positive behaviors, in an effort to lighten up the mood and ward off grumpiness, crabbiness, and rudeness for 24 hours.

Now, myself – I’m pretty grumpy all of the time, so if I cut that kind of stuff out, people probably wouldn’t recognize me!
