Along The Ad Routes by Mike Reilly

We had beautiful weather for our next-to-the-last Fall Baseball week on Sunday. It’s too bad that four of the six teams didn’t get a chance to play as three cancelled at the last minute – too much homecoming I guess plus some football dings! Since several games haven’t been played yet, we may go another week (or two) if the teams want to and weather permits. I’m hoping only at one field (Centennial) though!

Last Saturday was my Iowa-Grant day. First I attended and took photos at the Linden All-School reunion held at the Community Building around noon. Then, the I-G classes of 1961 and ’62 were at the Red Room in Dodgeville for a reunion, so I stopped there too! It was good seeing familiar faces and renewing old acquaintances at both spots!

Saturday morning breakfast took us to the south east a little. We were really shorthanded as Tom had to go to the Dells to get his summer trailer ready for winter at his trailer park.Dave had other plans and Royce, who just had his hip replaced, will be out of commission for a couple more weeks. We headed to Darlington and the place called Glennies. We had been there several times before, but it was a first for the four of us, all having the special. It was Apple pancakes with carmel sauce and whipped cream on top. Bob added a sausage patty and I added three bacon strips. Our server was Wendy and the owner stopped once to refill our coffee and chat for a minute. We walked in a couple of women at a table said “Here comes Iowa County.” They were both Dodgeville graduates who had married and moved to Darlington. As graduates, one was a Flynn and the other a Powell. Bob stayed and chatted for a little while because he thought he may have taught them in middle school. I think they both said something like “we were lucky” and had another 5th grade teacher! (just kidding!) I also spotted umpire Chuck Keister, who seems to always be at Glennie’s when we are! The food was very good as was the service. And the price just hit the spot!

The Dodgeville Lions Club annual Fun Night is Saturday, October 10 at the Red Room Bar & Restaurant in Dodgeville. They serve Iowa County Cattlemen’s Steaks with all the fixings. They have raffle drawings and you get a chance to win $2000, $800, $600, $400, $200 or $50 (10 chances) There is also a live auction. It’s a good chance to have some good conversation with friends while tickets are being drawn following the meal!

High School football playoffs will be starting soon as there are only two regular season weeks left. They begin October 23. But, before that both girls volleyball and boys soccer playoffs begin on Tuesday, October 20. And Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24 will be the cross country sectionals. That means the state championships follow on HALLOWEEN!

If all has gone well the first part of last week there is a newly resurfaced parking lot by the courthouse and Chronicle buildings. Rain and a machine breakdown caused it to be delayed a week or so, but all stations were ago on Monday!

Today, Thursday, October 8 is a little bit of an obscure one. It’s World Egg Day that was established in Vienna, Austria in 1996 at an International Egg Commission conference, when it was decided that the power of the egg would be celebrated on the second Friday in October each year. In 2026, World Egg Day marks its 30th anniversary, celebrating three decades of recognizing the egg’s incredible nutritional value and versatility. Since its beginnings, egg lovers around the world have found creative ways to honor this nutrient powerhouse, and the global celebration continues to grow and evolve each year. There are many ways to get involved in the 30th anniversary celebrations, from hosting community breakfasts to organizing educational activities. However you choose to celebrate, World Egg Day is a unique opportunity to join the global celebrations of one of the world’s most versatile and nutritious foods.

I almost always have eggs every Friday at the Red Room in Dodgeville and have omelettes at nearly everyone of the 79 places we have been for Saturday morning breakfasts. When I was a kid on the farm, we had eggs, bacon, toast and whatever every morning for breakfast! So I eat my share of eggs.
