August 20th National Radio Day
I ran into a group of “older” women last Wednesday at Bob’s Bitchin’ BBQ that were all wearing “Mississippi Sisters” t-shirts. I ended up walking out with them and I asked if they came all the way from Mississippi to eat here. One of them answered, “Yes, all the way from the Mississippi River!”

Saturday morning breakfast took us to the south. We had planed to go to Shullsburg (for the 2nd time) but Bob couldn’t make it and we wanted him there for our 80th place! So we stopped a little short of that destination and went to Nick’s in Cuba City. We had been there at least two other times, but for Royce, it was his first time. It was Tom driving me, Terry, Royce and Potsie. Oh, and Royce was impressed with his biscuits and gravy with eggs. Tom had an amazing taco omelette while Potsie had eggs and French toast. Terry and I opted for the cinnamon French Toast with eggs and bacon. It was all very good! Melissa was our waitress and kept a good eye on us while there was a young bus boy who kept our coffee flowing! Potsie stopped near the Kitchen and talked with the owner, telling him how he was impressed with everything, especially how clean everything was!

When it came time to “pay the piper” I reached in my pocket and found out I didn’t have any money or credit card! I had changed my trousers that morning, taking everything out of the pockets of the other ones. I set everything aside and didn’t pick up my money! Lucky for me Terry (who was seated next to me) came to my rescue. I got him his money back yet that day. I hate to be in debt to anyone!

It rained a good share of the day last Thursday, but the Upland Hills Health Family Fun Day and Run/Walk along with the Family Resource Center backpack giveaway took place ok at Harris Park in Dodgeville. There were a lot of happy youngsters and family members at both events!

The summer event pretty much ends with the Iowa County Fair at the fairgrounds in Mineral Point that runs Thursday, September 3 thru Labor Day. We take turns covering days at the fair. My main day is Saturday – Beef and Lamb Show Day plus the Junior Fair Livestock Auction and more! That’s 5 days of activities going on at the Iowa County Fairgrounds in Mineral Point. Like they say, “It’s Your Fair – Be There!”

I hear a lot of people talking about the work that has been done at the stoplights in Dodgeville at the north end of town. They can’t believe that any engineer would have designed what has taken place. Besides the wasted space that’s out there the lights need some sort of sensor. Twice now, in the evening, I have sat at the north/south lights for what seemed like an eternity when there has been no action from the east west – just waiting for the lights to change! Also, if you’re coming off of Highway YZ from the east and get in the turn lane to head north on US 23, but want to head straight ahead into Subway, you can’t see to your left due to the angle you sit at. That’s an accident just waiting to happen when there’s a green light to your left!

“Friday Night Lights” begins this week with a full schedule of action for area teams. Pick out the game you want to see. The weather is supposed to be great!

Today is National Radio Day. It’s celebrated on August 20 and honors the invention of radio, its historical impact as the first mass electronic medium, and its ongoing role in delivering local news, entertainment, and emergency communication to communities every day. The oldest major ongoing radio show is the Grand Ole Opry, which began broadcasting weekly as the WSM Barn Dance on November 28, 1925. Depending on the category (such as continuous network broadcasts or daily segments), a few other pioneer programs from the 1920s and 1930s also hold distinct longevity records.
I remember growing up and listening to the radio (no TV yet) to such shows as Hopalong Cassidy, The Green Door, Gene Autry, etc!
