Along The Ad Routes by Mike Reilly

Saturday morning breakfast took us to a familiar spot in Blanchardville – The Viking Cafe. But, wait a minute – it changed hands a while back and we’ve been there since that happened, but I didn’t count that in places we’ve been. So that makes 79 now! We are almost at 80 before my 80th birthday! The Viking is now called “River Bend Cafe” as the Pecatonica River bends around inside of Blanchardville! Our usual table – just inside the front door to the leftwas occupied so we went to the next available table. It was Terry driving Bob, Potsie, Royce and me from Dodgeville. We had Raya Newkirk who is related to the Gants in Blanchardville. She has a great smile! She wrote our orders down right, but when mine arrived it had Bob’s peanut butter and English muffin on it and Bob had my wheat toast. Terry and Bob’s omelettes were switched, but they both ate theirs. Once Raya found out we like our morning coffee she kept us filled up! In all, everything was very good!

When we were leaving, Bob struck up a conversation with a table of women. They wanted to know about our getting together for Saturday breakfast. They asked if I critiqued each place. I said I write about them and mention their names each week in my column and only haven’t mentioned the name of one place in all that time due to it not being up to our standards.

My summer at the Centennial Park concession stand ended last Thursday night with our final regular season Home Talent Night League game. Arena came to town and with it being our final game I didn’t want to stock up too much stuff. After the game started, however, I had to commandeer niece Kelly, from Waunakee, to help me while I cooked more burgers, hot dogs and brats. As it turned out the night was really busy and she stayed in the stand for the entire game. She agreed it was a great spot to watch the game, but it seemed that every time her son Taylor got up to bat there would be a rush at the window! But, she saved my life. I probably wouldn’t have made it through the 7 innings by myself! And it was a record $$$ night for a Night League game!

I’m losing one of my favorite people at Cathryn’s Market as Olive Duve left this week to head to college near Savannah, Georgia. I was there pretty much day one when she started at Cathryn’s. I wish her all the luck in her future and hope she stops by when she can! Cathryn’s is also losing two other favorites of mine – Ava Miller and Chloe Burreson, to school but they will be around some when they aren’t at UW-Platteville!

The summer event pretty much ends with the Iowa County Fair at the fairgrounds in Mineral Point that runs Thursday, September 3rd thru Labor Day. We take turns covering days at the fair. My main day is Saturday – Beef and Lamb Show Day plus the Junior Fair Livestock Auction and more! That’s 5 days of activities going on at the Iowa County Fairgrounds in Mineral Point. Like they say, “It’s Your Fair – Be There!”

Friday Night Lights is almost here as high school football scrimmages are this week. Regular season games start next Friday night. Most games are on Friday night, but sometimes Highland plays on Thursday night while Pecatonica/Argyle plays sometimes on Saturday afternoons. *

Niece Shelly and Dodgeville Chronicle “doit aller” had a birthday last Saturday. We had a little get-together for her on Friday, mainly for employees!

I’m dropping back to Wednesday (yesterday) August 12 for my special day. It’s National Vinyl Record Day. It commemorates Thomas Edison’s invention of the phonograph in 1877. The day wa founded by Gary Freiberg in Los Osos, California, to honor the cultural and historical impact of analog sound and music recording. The day encourages listening to all kinds of music on vinyl records. Spin a disc on a jukebox or show off your style by demonstrating your hip-hop moves. Now, back in the 60s mainly, I was the “dance” for Dodgeville High School. I hade a collection of around 300 45s that I played for dances and after sporting events. Maybe I was a DJ before there were DJs!
