We received a note from Mary Minter with her renewal for the Chronicle. She said: “Enclosed is my check for $52.00 for one year subscription, plus one free month. This is my 69th year of renewing the Dodgeville Chronicle. Before that I read my folks’ (Louie and Loretta Otter) paper, so have been reading it for over 80 years. It has always been a good informative paper of local events, people news, with legal and sports articles. Keep up the good work. Mary Minter Richland Center. (formally Avoca)”

Here’s a little driving story from the other day. I was approaching a 4-way stop intersection with vehicles coming to my left and directly across from me. I was the first one to get to the intersection and turning left, but the vehicle across from me turned right first and it was the third one to get to the intersection. What ever happened to right-of-way? All three of us did get there very close together, but that vehicle definitely was the last one!

Saturday morning breakfast had to stay very close to home and be early because of the Wisconsin Grilled Cheese Championships held at Harris Park that day. Potsie had to be there early to help set up the beverage area and I had to be there to take early photos and volunteer where needed. It was a short group at Cafe by Country Kitchen at 7:00 a.m. with myself, Potsie, Bob and Royce there. Terry had to go to a cousin’s funeral, Tom headed to the Dells to their camper and Dave went to Chicago to see his father and sons. Stephanie was our waitress. She also works the deli at Walmart and had a few stories to tell! There was a young family there who had about a 2-year old daughter who loved to smile at everybody and say goodbye to them when she left!

After breakfast I came back to the office for a short time before heading to the Grilled Cheese. When I got back there, Potsie had the beverage area under control! I ran into several people I hadn’t seen in quite some time and had some good conversations in catching up with them!

When the event ended, the Dodgeville High School Baseball Team showed up to help tear down, load supplies in vehicles and take everything back to the Dodgeville Chamber of Commerce office. They did a great job and things were done pretty fast. Oh, and the played a conference game at Lancaster earlier in the day and won 3-0!

Speaking of Dodgeville High School baseball, there’s a junior varsity tournament here this Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. There will be two games at both Centennial Park and the High School Field at the Middle School. I’m not sure of the temperatures that day, but I think it’s supposed to get near 60 degrees, but be very cool in the early hours. There will be concession stands at both fields. I’m not sure what all will be sold, but hopefully plenty of warm drinks!

Mineral Point and Pecatonica baseball teams play at the “Field of Dreams” in Dyersville, Iowa today (Thursday, April 30). Just as it was a unforgettable time for Dodgeville to play at American Family Field in Milwaukee recently, this will be one for both of these teams, fans, family and everyone involved!

Two more weeks before the “Cruizin the Courthouse” opener (May 14), formerly Cars ‘n Coffee. Remember it’s now the 2nd Thursday of the month through October and not the 2nd Saturday! It will now run from 5:00 p.m. until dusk.

National Bugs Bunny Day is celebrated every year on April 30. It commemorates the date this happy-go-lucky bunny made his first appearance in 1938. We are getting ready to enjoy the day in the most fun way possible – by binge-watching “Looney Tunes” throughout the day, eating carrots like Bugs Bunny, and spreading the fun all over social media! Did you know, Bugs Bunny’s first appearance wasn’t on TV or any cartoon channels, but on a short film? A prototype Bugs rabbit with some of the personality of a finalized Bugs, though looking very different, was originally featured in the film Porky’s Hare Hunt, released on April 30, 1938.

Boy, I’m really dating myself talking about a cartoon character that began about 1940 – that was before I was born!
