Saturday morning breakfast took us north to Spring Green and The General Store. We were all hungry for their pancakes, so that’s what Terry, Potsie, Dave and I had. We had them with blueberries, apples, peaches and pecans! Royce had eggs, and bacon while Bob had cinnamon swirl French toast and bacon. It was all very good, as usual. We have three or four people bringing us our food and a different one taking our order, plus a different one taking our money. So we get to have interaction with many people. You get your own table service, coffee and water. They bring your soda or milk. The pure maple syrup makes the pancakes even better! We always run into Sharon Nicholas there. She used to live just north of Dodgeville on Highway 23 where she was an artist making her bead houses, etc. in her studio. Her late husband David did a lot of restoration work to buildings in downtown Dodgeville years back. She now has her studio just off the downtown in Spring Green.
John Houck, former funeral director at Lulloff-Peterson-Houck in Dodgeville had invited us to stop at his garage/shed he built on the east side of Spring Green where he works on his classic cars. So we made that stop and looked it all over. He has moved everything he had in Dodgeville to that spot now. There are some “classy” vehicles there! It was good to see John!
The Wisconsin River was pretty high after the (maybe) 8″ of rain we’ve had this past week. It wasn’t as bad as I had thought it would be, but it was into the shore line more so than usual. There was a lot of standing water along Highway 23 from the river area and heading into Spring Green in the wooded areas. I guess Avoca has a lot of water damage from Tuesday and Friday’s rain, as does Arena.
The Dodgeville High School baseball team and fans had a great time playing at American Family Field in Milwaukee (home of the Brewers) last Thursday. The won big over Portage and had a team photo taken with the big screen with their name on it in the background. It’s a whole different feeling pitching from a Major League mound, batting from the home plate, playing in the field and sitting in the dugouts!
It’s about 2 weeks before the “Cruizin the Courthouse” opener – formerly Cars ‘n Coffee. Remember it’s now the 2nd Thursday of the month through October and not the 2nd Saturday! It will now run from 5:00 p.m. until dusk.
This Saturday is the Wisconsin Grilled Cheese Championships at Harris Park in Dodgeville. The weather is supposed to be pretty nice – not the snow we had a few years back. There are a lot of vendors with stands there and a good amount of chefs competing. Hopefully everyone will come out and see what there is to offer and watch the chefs as they prepare their goodies! It goes from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. And there’s always clean-up to do at the end!
Saturday is also the big day for Dodgeville City-Wide Garage Sales. There will be a lot of traffic around with some highway construction, hopefully not putting a crimp in things!
For my special day this week, I’m backing up one day to Wednesday, April 22. That’s “National Jelly Bean Day”. It’s a day to enjoy a handful of your favorite jelly bean flavor and share on Social Media using #NationalJelly- BeanDay. Jelly Beans have a long history, reaching back further than their association with Easter and, in fact, the Easter Bunny. In the mid-1800’s, the Jelly Bean was developed, bringing these flavorful rainbows into our lives and much joy with them. It is thought that the original bean was inspired by the sweet candy known as Turkish delight, comprised of rich fruit and powdered sugar. Perhaps the development was someone trying to find a less messy and more portable version of this already popular treat.
I know I like to eat them more days than just Easter!
