We received a nice note and 2 renewals from Bob Reddell from Janesville. He said, “Hi – continue to enjoy The Dodgeville Chronicle very much. Please find enclosed check for my renewal for 2 years along with a gift subscription for 2 years for Gregory Reddell, Dodgeville. Thank you for what you do for Dodgeville & Iowa County.”
Thursday was opening day for some of the area baseball and soccer teams, but since it rained pretty much all day long that didn’t happen. So those teams had to wait for the next scheduled game to open up the season. Some teams had already gotten a game in the Thursday before! We needed the rain though!
With the spring leading into summer and weekend travel for some of our usual breakfast crew, we decided to make our longest trip of our places we go, so while everyone is available and we headed to Bloomington, home of Ma’s Bakery. It is by far one of our most favorite places we go. It’s not only great food, but the conversation we have with our waitress, Terry, is unforgettable! She has a sense of humor of her own and keeps us in stitches from the time we order until the time we pay our bill! She made me promise not to tell some of the words she uses! It’s three sisters who run the place and Gwen keeps out coffee cups full all of the time even though the place is full! Terry asked if we were getting “the Bob”! She coined that name from the last time we were there in honor of Bob Kratochwill, a shirttail relative who she says is “special” because “you’re relative”! The “Bob” is actually a loaded Western omelet! It was Bob, Terry, Tom, Potsie, Dave (back from vacation) and me leaving the Chronicle at 7:00 a.m. to make the trip with Tom driving all of us in his SUV. Royce had some surgery and is out of commission for a few weeks! Our usual table that holds 8 was available. Sometimes I think they know when we are coming! The drive started out a little foggier than we would’ve liked and when we turned to the west at Fennimore it became very dense fog. When we turned south on Fairgrounds Road off of Highway 18 to head into Bloomington it became very clear skies. Waitress Terry said it was because “we live right here”! This is a place that, if you don’t mind a long drive, you should really make the trip! They have great baked goods. Each one of us visited the bakery part and came away with something. Me, I bought three items – a sticky roll and two cinnamon rolls. I hadn’t had any sweets since Lent began and still had to wait one more day (Easter) to have one. But it was worth it!
We still need more chefs that want to make grilled cheese specialties for the April 25th Wisconsin Grilled Cheese Championships that will be held right here in Dodgeville – at Harris Park, inside of Ley Pavilion. The number of entries depict how many VIP tickets that can be sold. There’s a lot of work and cost to make this event happen and we are also short on volunteers! Please volunteer your time for some of it and if you can cook, that’d be great! I can’t cook, but I have been a part of it since it was moved to Dodgeville, and it is a great day with a lot of fun for the entire family. It starts at 11:00 a.m. and goes until 4:00 p.m.
Another event happening that same day is the Annual Dodgeville Garage Sales throughout the entire community. People can sign up for it at the Dodgeville Chronicle to be placed on the map and can also run an ad in our paper!
It’s about 4 weeks before the “Cruizn’ the Courthouse” opener – formerly Cars ‘n Coffee. Remember it’s now the 2nd Thursday of the month through October and not the 2nd Saturday! It will now run from 5:00 p.m. until dusk.
We had a couple of very nice rainy days last week. One cancelled a lot of sporting events. With it being early and non-conference contests mostly, a lot of them probably won’t be made up. That part is too bad, but there are a lot of days left in the short spring season to get contests in. We are ready at the Centennial Park Concession Stand to serve up the best hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs and brats in the area for a concession stand! You’ll see me and Jessica there most of the time!
With Saturday being brother Pat’s birthday, we had a nice family meal at Bob’ Bitchin BBQ and on Easter Sunday a great family get together for Easter at niece Amy’s!
My “special day” this week falls on Friday, April 10. It’s National Farm Animals Day that is celebrated annually on April 10th to promote the humane care, rescue, and welfare of farm animals. Founded in 2005 by Colleen Paige, this day raises awareness about the treatment of livestock and encourages finding homes for abused or neglected farm animals. It is a day meant to bring awareness to the overall rough conditions that farm animals are forced to live under.
Now, back in the days when I farmed (50s, 60s) that probably was truer than that it is now. A lot of the farm animals probably live in better conditions than I do!!!
