Along The Ad Routes

by Mike Reilly

Welcome to the “Deep Freeze” that happened over last week! Temperatures Friday were near 50 degrees and on Saturday in the mid 20s. But then came Sunday, Monday and Tuesday when temperatures barely got above 0! As far as I saw on my vehicle, the high on Sunday was 1 degree! Monday was about the same and Tuesday - I don’t know yet - is up in the air, but may be the worst of the three days with the wind! All I know is that it’s cold! Wednesday temperatures are supposed to hit the mid 20s with it staying around that into the weekend. We have to remember - it is WISCONSIN!

Saturday morning breakfast took us to Hollandale to Stroz Inn. We always have a good time there because the waitresses fill us in on a lot of things! The group was Bob, Terry, Dewey, Potsie, me and Dave Stone. Tom had a funeral to attend. Stone is recovering from foot surgery, so he had an extra pair of legs (crutches), but is going to be in a walking boot this Saturday when we see him! Potsie had a 10:00 a.m. meeting at Cathryn’s Market about making plans for this summer’s “Cars and Coffee” shows that are outside on Merrimac Street by Cathryn’s Market. He wanted to stay close to Dodgeville and also head out a little early - 7:15 a.m. We were back shortly after 9:00 though. I had a huge omelette with hash browns, cheese and onions with toast. Bob did the same, only he took half of his home - I did not! I guess I’m stuck on omelettes!  I like them with lots of veggies, so that should make them healthy!

Dori Hill was our waitress. She lives just a block away from Stroz so the cold doesn’t bother her much. We had a nice conversation about her family with a lead for a story down the road in the makings - can’t divulge any more information! Dori did a great job keeping our coffee cups filled and making sure everything was going well! Jen, the ower and someone I knew when she was in high school and a catcher on the River Valley softball team, wasn’t there, as she is there late on Friday nights!

The Dodgeville Co-Op gymnastics team is having a great season so far. They have set some team and individual records. It’s great to see young ladies from Dodgeville, Mineral Point, Iowa-Grant and Highland coming together, bonding and making up a very tight team!

We have some pretty darn good girls basketball teams in our coverage area like Argyle/Pecatonica, Barneveld and Mineral Point. Also the boys basketball teams of Barneveld, Highland and Mineral Point are doing really well. We’re hoping for some big things when it comes to the state tournament trail!

And we can’t forget the wrestlers! Dodgeville has two that are ranked high with one (Haakon Peterson) already signed to go the a Division 1 school - Michigan. Mineral Point’s Roen Carey will be heading to the UW in Madison. They are a tough team with a couple of others doing great! Iowa-Grant/Highland is another team that we will see wrestlers at state from and Pecatonica/Argyle has one unbeaten wrestler and another with just one loss!

Today - Thursday, January 23 - is a day that’s close to my heart (or should I say stomach). It’s National Pie Day. National Pie Day is celebrated in the United States on January 23rd. It's a day to celebrate the American dessert of pie, which can be made in many varieties.

How it started: Charlie Papazian, a teacher from Boulder, Colorado, started National Pie Day in the mid-1970s. He chose his own birthday, January 23rd, to be the day.

I like pie, almost any kind!
