Along The Ad Routes

It was an interesting Saturday morning breakfast. On Thursday as we made plans to go to Argyle, but when Potsie got hold of me to see where we were going, he said he couldn’t go that far because he had to be over by Cobb at 10:00 a.m. to investigate the fire from the other day. Dewey was going to head from Argyle to Belleville to see his son and grandchildren. After Potsie said he couldn’t go that far I checked with Dewey and he said he wasn’t going to go to Belleville after all, so I changed everything to Mineral Point at the Pointer Cafe so the six of us could all go. When we met at the Chronicle at 7:30 Saturday morning, Dewey, Potsie, Tom and I knew where we were going, but Bob and Terry thought we were still going to Argyle. Bob had been at the Viking Cafe in Blanchardville the day before and found out they had homemade cream puffs on Saturday so he thought we would stop there on our way back from Argyle. Well we ended up going to Mineral Point, but then Bob wanted to go to Blanchardville for the cream puffs, so after breakfast (served by Amy) Bob, Terry, Tom and I went to Blanchardville for the goodies. I also got to stop at Ederer’s to pick up twine for tying newspaper bundles, so the trip had a twofold purpose. Actually it turned into threefold because Bob’s granddaughter is buying a house on F as you head out of Blanchardville and we stopped to see it and talk with the inlaws that were working on it. We ended up making a longer trip for breakfast than usual!

Coming back from the Blanchardville trip on Highway 39 we checked out the Ivey’s Quarry that is located by the Proctor farm. They have really carved into the hill. Most of the stuff is used for bedding for cattle!

Two or three times over the weekend I was following vehicles that made turns without the driver using their directionals. Actually I take that back, they turned them on after they made their turn!

The Annual Wisconsin Grilled Cheese Championships will be here before you know it. They are held at Harris Park right here in Dodgeville on Saturday, April 20. We are really, really looking for people to compete and to volunteer so take a look at the Dodgeville Chamber of Commerce website to be a part of it! We really do need people to sign-up in both spots, especially as a competitor as the VIP tickets that are sold and given out depend on the number of competitors!

Congratulations to the Dodgeville Co-op Gymnastics Team for placing 6th at state in Division 2. In the team event, Senior Brooklyn Murphy (Dodgeville) placed 3rd on the beam and in the individual events sophomore Faith Yaun (Highland) placed 3rd on beam. That’s fantastic. Great job by the entire team from Dodgeville, Highland, Iowa-Grant and Mineral Point!

Today is National Cereal Day. Many eat eggs and meat for breakfast, but about 46% of Americans begin their day with a bowl of cereal with milk. The first ready-to-eat breakfast cereal was invented in the U.S. by James Caleb Jackson in 1863 and it was called Granula. That cereal didn’t become popular as far as heavy bran and nuggets needed soaking overnight before they turned tender enough to eat. The cereal that didn’t need soaking overnight was invented by John Harvey Kellogg, who experimented with granola and wheat. He discovered a light and flaky product, perfect for breakfast. He patented his invention in 1891 and launched the Cornflakes brand in 1895. The Cornflakes captured market and became very popular.
