Along The Ad Routes by Mike Reilly

I don’t know what it is about writing my column, but last week my computer quit on me and I had to start writing it all over again. Well, this week the same thing happened, but before I got to the end!

I think I’ve found out that northern people are more courteous than southern people! I wrote last week about the semi driver who stopped for 5-6 vehicles to come out of a side-street stop sign to turn to the south on Highway 23 in Spring Green. Well, the other day I was coming out of Subway in Dodgeville, turning to the south, and there were two vehicles stopped at the stoplight on County YZ and US 23. A vehicle, coming from the north, stopped and left space for me to venture out and head toward the downtown!

We received a couple of notes with renewals to the Chronicle recently (keep the coming, please!). The first was from Rosalie May of Mineral Point. She said, “Hi Everyone – Enclosed is my check for 1 year renewal of the Dodgeville Chronicle. Please add 4 weeks to my subscription because I am early Enjoyed your paper for 62 years now and hope to do so for many more ahead. Your staff does an amazing job. Kudos to all!”

The second came from Dodgeville graduate and classmate of Pats and his wife – Richard Ellenboldt of Madison. It read: “Hi Heather: Enclosed please find our check for our yearly renewal. We continue to enjoy reading the many articles and appreciate everyone’s efforts to make this possible. Heather, please say hi to Pat and Mike for us.” Sandy and Richard Ellenboldt.

We sure did get the rain Friday night! It began just after midnight and boy did it rain, thunder and lightning! It was still raining when we left for Saturday morning breakfast at 7:30. Terry reported 4″ in his rain gauge and Tom said he had 3.5″.

We met at the Chronicle at 7:30 a.m. for breakfast with Tom driving Bob. Terry, Potsie, me and Dave (he met us at the Chronicle). Royce is out of commission for a while as he just had knee surgery last week. We called to check on him on our way back from Muscoda. That’s where we went – Vicki’s Cozy Cafe, another of our favorite places. We love their food and their” narrative” menu! We got there and they only have one spot for five or more people (we’ve had as many as seven in that spot) so we grabbed a booth and put chairs on each end. They were OK with doing that! A young man from Boscobel seated us and our favorite waitress Tiffini (who always tells us she’s quitting) – her mother runs it took our orders. We usually give her a hard time, but this time we went real easy on her because she was alone and it was really busy. Terry, Dave, Potsie and I had the daily special – Blueberry Pancake with blueberry syrup, oatmeal crumble topping, powdered sugar and whipped topping and it was good and it was large! Tom and Bob had the omelette. Their menu is hilarious to read – “Old Blueballs” the “Geezer” (omelette) and many more!

When we left Vicki’s, we headed to the grocery store there because Bob said they have really good tea biscuits and then we were going to Meister Cheese. Bob went in the grocery store and they don’t do the tea biscuits anymore. We headed to Meister’s and it was closed. So, we struck out twice! And figuring one more strikeout and we were done for the day, we headed back to Dodgeville.

The rain stopped the Dodgeville/Ridgeway Home Talent Oldtimers game set for 3:00 that day and it also stopped Sunday’s “Fall Ball” play – fields way too wet! We will shoot for the next three Sundays for “Fall Ball’ and see if the rain holds off!

For my special day, it’s today (Thursday, September 24). It’s Innergize Day, the day after the Autumn Equinox. It was named by Michelle Porchia of Inner Dimensions., The day encourages people to step back from busy schedules and look inward. Purpose: It mirrors nature’s shift into autumn by prompting a mini-hibernation to renew your mind, body, and spirit after a fast-paced summer. Core Idea. Ways to celebrate: Unplug: Turn off your phone, stay off social media, and tune out digital distractions. Relax: Take a long bath, read a book, or enjoy a quiet walk outside.Reflect: Meditate, journal, or practice deep breathing exercises.

Above, that’s me being “innergized”!
