Back to School: A New Year Full of Possibilities

It’s hard to believe, but summer has once again slipped away.

The days of sleeping a little later, enjoying long evenings, family vacations and a less-structured schedule are giving way to school buses, backpacks, homework, sporting events, music rehearsals and all the activity that comes with another school year.

For students, the beginning of school can bring a mixture of excitement and nervousness. Some are eager to see friends they haven’t seen all summer. Others may be entering a new school, starting high school or facing challenges they have never encountered before.

Whatever their feelings, a new school year represents something important: a fresh start.

Every student has an opportunity to learn something new, meet new people, discover a talent or overcome a challenge. A student who struggled last year can try again. A student who wasn’t sure of themselves can find confidence. And a student who already knows what they want can take another step toward reaching that goal.

But education is about much more than grades and test scores.

Schools are where young people learn responsibility, teamwork, perseverance and how to work with people who may not always agree with them. They learn that sometimes things don’t go their way-and that getting back up and trying again is part of life.

Those lessons are every bit as important as what is found in a textbook. And while students are at the center of the school year, they certainly aren’t alone.

Teachers and school staff deserve our appreciation for the time and effort they put into preparing classrooms and lessons and for the many hours they will spend helping young people succeed. Behind every successful school year are people who care deeply about their students.

Parents and grandparents also play an important role. Encouraging a child, attending a game or concert, helping with homework, asking how their day went or simply reminding them that someone believes in them can make a tremendous difference.

The entire community has a stake in our schools.

We should support our students not only when they win championships or receive academic honors, but also when they struggle, make mistakes or simply need someone to tell them they can do better.

As another school year begins, let’s remember that every child who walks through those school doors is someone’s son, daughter, grandchild, brother, sister or friend.

Let’s give them the encouragement, patience and support they need. Let’s cheer for them in the classroom, on the athletic field, on the stage and in every other activity where they are learning and growing.

And let’s remind our young people that they don’t have to have their entire future figured out today. They simply need to take the next step, work hard, treat others with respect and make the most of the opportunities in front of them.

A new school year is a new chapter. Let’s make it a good one.
