Some of the Saturday Morning Breakfast Crew went to the Cobb Lions Club’s Annual Steak (and chicken) Supper Wednesday night at the Cobb Community Building. The steak was very tasty and the sweet corn (Mueller’s) was really good !! We usually see about the same people every year which is good because it may be the only time our paths cross!

This week it’s the Cobb Corn Roast that goes thru Sunday! There are such events as BINGO, the return of the Car Show, live music, ball games, volleyball, chicken BBQ, FREE Sweet Corn and a huge parade, both on Sunday.There will be games and activities for the youngsters too. Then, of course, the summer ends with the Iowa County Fair at the fairgrounds in Mineral Point that runs Thursday thru Labor Day!

Saturday morning breakfast kept us very close to home, at the north end of Dodgeville to be exact. It was DodgeFest day, so Potsie had to be downtown early to help set up the beverage tent and refrigerated wagon! It was sprinkling outside, so he also had to find out what time things were going to start. 1:00 was the scheduled time for the “Local “acts, followed by three more that day. The main problem would be the set-up of the stage and get equipment out so it didn’t get wet! Anyway, we met at Cafe By Country Kitchen at 7:00 Saturday morning. I was there on Monday and told Amy Jo (Jo Jo, Mary Jo, Belinda Jo of maybe just plain Jo) that there would be 4-6 there at 7:00 a.m. Saturday. I got there right at 7:00 and Terry, Potsie and Royce were already inside. Bob came about a minute later. Terry and I had Strawberry/Banana Crepes. They were loaded with whipped cream and were very filling! Terry and I both added bacon with our order. Everything is better with bacon! Royce likes their Biscuits & Grave with 2 eggs. Bob and Potsie had the more traditional eggs & bacon breakfast! Jo Jo was her usual “give it right back at us” self!

The place was filling up pretty fast with the moisturizing outside. The table behind us was full of bicycle riders from the Milwaukee area who had camped at Blue Mounds State Park to take part in the Dairyland Dare bike ride. They said that with the rain they opted out of the race. They said there were about 500 signed up, but with the rain only about half took off early that morning!

No one was complaining about the rain because even with the 2.5-3″ we got, we still were short from our average for July.

I was really impressed with this year’s “local Talent” at the DodgeFest in Dodgeville Saturday. They kicked off the event that wasn’t even delayed due to rain that ended mid morning. Mallory Allen, DHS junior, kicked things off followed by Emma and Natalie Giddings, both DHS graduates. Another former DHS grad, Hannah Mikrut was the closing act with accompaniment by “The Red Door Duo” from Mineral Point. I know the families really well of each of them. I hope they all return again next year, with maybe more joining them!

If I was Kwik Trip North I would be screaming about the new intersection at Highways 18-151-23. Sometimes it’s nearly impossible to get out of that spot with vehicles backed up so far to the south. Whoever engineered that spot wasn’t thinking of everyone. In fact, I’m not sure they were thinking at all! It’s not easy at the Culver’s intersection or Highway 23-YZ either!

Today is National Root Beer Float Day, a day people all over celebrate. Both ice cream soda and carbonated root beer were first created in the 1870s. A couple of decades later, these two inventions came together in one great ice cream treat.
In the 1890s, Frank J. Wisner was the owner of Cripple Creek Brewing Company in Cripple Creek, Colorado. On the night of August 19, 1893, Wisner was in his factory making soda water for his customers. As he looked out the window at the snow-capped Cow Mountain, he saw the mountain peak covered with snow. It looked like a scoop of vanilla ice cream atop the dark mountain. Suddenly, he had a brainstorm.
Back in the day, we used to flock to the A&W Drive-in at the north end of Dodgeville for a Root Beer Float with A&W Root Beer – yummy! Merle & Vickie Nadler (both deceased) ran a great drive-in!
