The Bullets staged a late comeback against Verona in a Western Section title Sunday but the Cavaliers prevailed 4-3.
The Cavs had all their scoring done the by the seventh with solo runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth. Then it was Blanchardville’s turn to make it a ball game.
In the seventh Drew Schliem reached first on a Cavaliers’ error and Cole Breuer’s bunt was misplayed to put runners on second and third. Schliem then scored on a third Verona error.
The Bullets added two more runs in the eighth to pull within one but could not catch the Cavs. Brooks Chandler and Drew Nafzger singled. Breuer singled in Chandler and Nafzger came home on a passed ball. Schiem was 2×4 to lead the Bullets. Hunter Enloe, Tyler Mckeon, Breuer, Nafzger and Chandler rounded out the seven hit attack.
Verona scored all their runs on three hits. Carter Kelley, a Edgewood University player, had one of them with a double. Justin Scanlon and Tristan Largent had the other two hits. Eleven walks by the Bullets helped the Cavs.
Scanlan and Kelley had an rbi each.
Hunter Enloe worked five innings for the Bullets. He gave up two hits, three runs with two earned, while walking seven and striking out six.
Mckeon finished the last three with one hit, one unearned run with four walks and two strikeouts.
