Barneveld baseball stays undefeated with two wins over River Ridge
The Barneveld Golden Eagles baseball team, now 19-0 for the season and ranked first in the state in Division 4 according to MaxPreps, defeated River Ridge at home Monday night 8-4, then traveled to River Ridge on Tuesday afternoon and won 11-2.
In Monday’s contest, with one out in the bottom of the third inning, Karsen Leuzinger and Landon Beicher both singled, and Leuzinger scored on Ty Thousand’s single to center. With two outs and runners on second and third, Liam Genrich connected on a single that scored two runs making it 3-0 Eagles.
Barneveld added two more runs in the fourth when Hunter Larson hit a double scoring Mason Haesler who earlier walked. Larson stole third base and scored on Leuzinger’s sacrifice fly making it 5-0. It was 6-0 in the sixth after Haesler singled home Genrich who reached base earlier on a single.
Barneveld went up 8-0 in the in the bottom of the sixth inning when Thousand grounded out scoring a runner from third, then Genrich singled to score Beicher who earlier walked.
Ty Thousand pitched the seventh inning in relief of Mason Durst who pitched the previous six innings and got the win for the Eagles. But Thousand ran into some difficulty allowing the first three River Ridge batters to get on base with singles. With bases loaded and no outs, Brogan Mezera grounded out which scored a run. Thousand then hit a batter to load the bases again. Cael Koenig singled home a run, and with two outs, Alan Hernandez singled home two runs cutting the lead down to 8-4. Thousand stuck out the final batter to end the rally.
Durst pitched six innings allowing no runs, four hits, he struck out four and did not walk a batter. Thousand pitched one inning allowing four runs on five hits, he struck out two and walked none.
Offensively, Genrich led Barneveld at the plate going 3×3. Beicher and Thousand each had two hits.
Tuesday night at River Ridge, the Timberwolves took the early lead scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Barneveld tied the game in the top of the second inning with two outs and bases loaded, Mason Durst hit a ground ball and reached on an error which scored two runs. In the third, Barneveld went up 3-2 when Beicher scored on an error by the catcher.
In the top of the sixth inning, Barneveld scored five runs. Durst walked and scored on Larson’s double. After Leuzinger walked and runners at the corners, Larson scored on Beicher’s fielder’s choice. Thousand then singled home Leuzinger. Beicher then scored on Genrich’s sacrifice fly ball, and Aden Knight’s single allowed Thousand to score and the Eagles had an 8-2 lead.
Barneveld added three insurance runs in the seventh. Beicher doubled to score to runners, and Thousand’s single scoring Leuzinger who earlier walked.
Hunter Larson was dominating on the mound going the distance allowing two runs on six hits, he struck out ten and did not allow a walk.
Ty Thousand was equally dominate at the plate connecting on four hits on the afternoon. As a team, Barneveld had eight hits in the game.
Barneveld has three games before the WIAA baseball Regionals begin. They travel to Hillsboro this Thursday, then finish at home against Fall River on Friday and Seneca on Tuesday. All games are scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
