Along The Ad Routes

This week starts area high school graduations. From our coverage areas, Dodgeville and Mineral Point start things out with Friday night commencements. Highland and Iowa-Grant both are on Saturday. Then Barneveld concludes things on Saturday, May 30. Good luck to all graduates!

The first Cruizn’ the Courthouse (formerly Cars & Coffee) was held last Thursday in downtown Dodgeville. Most of the vintage vehicles were in the courthouse parking lot (next to the Chronicle), but there were even some in front of the courthouse on Iowa Street. There were several vehicles that I know of that came from out of the area, even out of state. One person said he really liked it and will make sure more come from his area in the future! Two members of the DHS class of ’65 were outside the Chronicle office with their wives one time I went out to take photos and talk with people. Tom Rowe and Bob Boldt were the two I spotted. Tom said that Bob made him come!

The storm Friday night really messed up my computer at the Chronicle office. But maybe I should say that I really messed things up trying to get back on it Saturday after breakfast. Not really knowing what I was doing, I did something to my DATA file and couldn’t get to the main part of what I usually work on. I probably should’ve left everything alone and waited until somebody else was available to get me going. But, you know men – they can fix everything. But just ask Terry Carroll – he fixes all my mistakes, except computer stuff!

There were numerous trees down in Dodgeville and the area from the storm. Wind gusts hit about 60 MPH for a short time. And the hour storm produced around 3/4″ rain in Dodgeville. When I got to the Chronicle office Saturday morning, there were several tree branches in front of the back door and some pretty good size!

Saturday morning breakfast took the crew east – Spring Garden in Mount Horeb. We hadn’t been there for maybe a year. They don’t serve bacon/bacon, only beef bacon. So that limits what we order to some extent. Anyway, it was Bob, Terry (driver), me, Royce and Potsie heading out at 7:30 to Mount Horeb. Dave met us there, coming from close by Klevenville. Tom was up north at his cabin. There was a group of Mount Horeb 1977 graduates who got there just before us, but luckily we were seated and got our orders in just before them! We had eaten and the people who came in just after we did were getting their order when we had just finished eating. Blueberry French toast was the choice of Terry and Dave. Royce went with his biscuits and gravy while Bob and Potsie had the more traditional eggs and stuff with sausage links (not bacon). Me, I had three crepes that were stuffed with blueberries and strawberries and topped with whipped cream. I added three sausage patties, something I shouldn’t have done! I made it through it all, but just barely! I think the waitstaff were grandsons of the original owners. One of the original owners’ sons also had to wait on tables. Everyone is short handed until schools let out! We opted to not take the 4-lane back as far as Barneveld. So we were that far on the scenic ID (former highway when I was younger, much younger!

The heat really came in over the weekend with temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s. With the cool evenings I guess that’s why the thunderstorms came in!

My special day is Thursday (today), May 21. It’s National Eat More Fruits and Vegetables Day. Created in 2015 by the Dole Food Company, this healthfocused holiday encourages people to add more nutrient-rich, fiber-filled produce to their diets to prevent chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. The holiday lands right on the cusp of summer, perfectly timing the peak season for fresh availability. It serves as a midway push during the broader National Fresh Fruits and Veggies Month. As well as nitrates, all fruit and vegetables provide us with potassium, which can also help lower blood pressure. It’s best to get the potassium we need through foods, rather than supplements.
