Memorial Day is the last Monday in May, and this year that is May 25th. Memorial Day is set aside to remember, mourn, and honor the military personnel who died while serving in the Armed Forces. Local Veteran organizations put flags on the graves in the cemeteries. If you take time to wander around in a cemetery and read some memorial stones, it can make you appreciate that you are able to observe. They gave their time and lives for our country to be safe. Say a prayer!
The Beckett-Kurth American Legion Post 257 will have a Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 25th, at 11:00. The Depot will be open until the crowd leaves. Inside, you will have access to information about the Veterans from Ridgeway. Shyanne made a great list, which you can check on your family’s military service. I also made a separate log of information that I had access to from a scrapbook of community information. Village of Ridgeway Memorial Brick order forms will be available. A quote for the day: “Lest We Forget” or it should not be forgotten
The Ridgeway Town Board passed a Data Center Moratorium. This had to be done because the Township of Ridgeway has an active Comprehensive Plan. This means that guidelines need to be set with this new potential for development. Melody, Town Treasurer, reported and then discussed another electronics collection option for the residents of Ridgeway Township this fall. The Clean Sweep day was smooth, and many thanks to the Bender family, who always make this so successful. Staying clean for them was not an option. The loose nails and hardware in the parking lot were a concern. Could I suggest putting small hardware into a Hi-C juice jug or seeking out something that can be a collection device? Your cooperation would be appreciated.
Folklore Village will be having an open mic on Tuesday, June 9th, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This is a special night and part of Tuesday Folk School. If you have something you want to share and or practice in front of a receptive group, this is your chance. You are welcome to present storytelling with poetry or just a story. Music is always welcome, and with the recitals and contests that have happened, your sharing would be appreciated for sure.
Folklore Village has many opportunities for you to join in, enjoy, and engage with. Folk School Weekends do need you to sign up early because the instructors are local and need time to prepare materials and such. These are classes such as Blacksmithing and Flavors of Bagels. Greg, Matt, and Michelle are the best in the trade they love. Folklore Village has some scholarships available.
The Hidden Valley Church wants us to remember to be kind. The suggestions for the month have been family, teachers, neighbors, a stranger or two, and not to forget yourselves. That can be simple if we allow that to happen. Volunteer drivers for ADRC and SWCAP can accomplish all of the above, “be kind.” When you drive someone, they belong to a family, which is somebody’s neighbor and teacher. They could be a stranger, but so happy to make a friend who volunteers. Did you know that being nice to others is being kind to yourself because you are appreciated?
The Iowa County Health Department has released the 2025 Annual Report. Public Health is many times not noticed. It is amazing the advice and services the Health Department offers from prenatal, infants, moms, the elderly, and in the schools. Contact tracing for multiple issues. Some ask why the hantavirus was such a concern. It could be because the death rate after infection was at one time 40%. COVID-19, it is said, was roughly 0.16%. Having and using a vaccine does make a difference in mortality rates.
The water testing lab at the Iowa County Health Department this year has found that one of four private wells was contaminated with bacteria. The wells had no rhyme or pattern except that it is water from underground and in private wells.
For the great news, the Iowa County Dispatch Center and Health Department report the lowest number of falls in Iowa County since June 2022. The hope is that it will continue to give relief to the EMT squads.
It was said that crime rates were down on Mothers Day because moms were spending time with family. Going to church on that Sunday was eerie. Driving on 18/151 and looking in the rear view mirror, then looking forward, with sightline for a mile, in both directions, nothing! We met very few cars going in the opposite direction. I did point it out to my Passenger Princess (Donna), and that is when I realized the phenomenon is real and why!

As Memorial Day weekend is upon us, let us remember the words of President Ronald Reagan, who said, “They gave up two lives: the one they were living and the one they would have lived.” Let us remember, so that we do not repeat, and that those who have gone before us will not have died in vain.

Also, thanks to Jack and Donna Jenkins and all the people who made Jenkins Field “Our Field of Dreams” in Livingston.
