Panthers’ softball scored 3 runs in the seventh to defeat Fennimore 5-4

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and trailing 4-2, Presley Lehman hit a double that brought in a run. Then, on a ground ball from Trinity Baker, Fennimore shortstop Campbell Fitzgerald made an error, allowing two more runs to score as Iowa-Grant secured a walk-off win over Fennimore on Tuesday night at Scheper Park in Cobb.

The Panthers scored a run in the first inning when Carley Shores singled in Ava Klass who earlier doubled making it 1-0. Fennimore scored four runs in the top of the second on Ellen Meyer’s double which scored a run to tie it. With two outs and bases loaded, Kayahna Furrer singled up the middle scoring Meyer and Brooklyn Mumm to make it 3-1. Brylie Zink then stole home, putting the Eagles up 4-1.

The Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the second inning when Quinn Hoeper reached base on an error by Fennimore second baseman Addison Meckley which scored Brynne Petit, who reached base earlier on an error.

Petit pitched the entire game and after she allowed those four runs in the second, she shut down the Eagles for the balance of the game. She allowed five hits, four runs (all earned), struck out four and walked one.

The key stat in the game was that Fennimore committed seven errors, the last one costing them the game. Iowa-Grant committed one error. Iowa-Grant will host Seneca on Friday, May 1 and will have a rematch at Fennimore on Thursday, May 7. Iowa-Grant is now 10-3 overall for the season.
