Superintendent Oberfoell announces retirement

At its April 8th meeting, Barneveld School Board Superintendent Robyn Oberfoell announced to the board she will be resigning her position for retirement effective June 30, 2027. Her announcement gives the school district time and opportunity to adequately plan for a change in administration and implement a smooth transition. Oberfoell shared that the school district has focused on managing the district with the mindset of continuous improvement and a deep commitment to the school and community it represents.

She said in a letter to the board, staff and community, assessments. “Throughout the district, we have had wonderful teammates retire or resign and immediately welcomed new members to the Golden Eagle

Team. Each day, amazing people choose to work here. It is not one person or one role that makes a difference. It’s the whole system that works together to provide exceptional opportunities for kids of all ages and remains committed to making Great Things Happen Here,” she said. A motion to approve her resignation was approved with regret and amend the Superintendent’s contract regarding outside pursuits or employment.

In the Student Representatives Report it was mentioned that in Forensics 40 students are advancing to the State competition. Of the 34 Solo Ensemble participants, 12 high school students and 22 middle school students. 6 will advance to State competition at UW-Platteville. It was noted that Spring sports have started and ACT and Pre-ACT tests were held. Prom was held April 11th, and this week the NHS Induction Ceremony is April 15th and the Pet Supply Drive are April 13-18 and the Sources of Strength Color Run is coming up May 9th

The Building Report highlights progress in student achievement, mental health and community activities. The ACT and PreACT Secure were administered on April 7. Forward testing for grades 3-8 began in mid-March, with Sophomores scheduled for Social Studies testing on April 14. High school scheduling for next year resulted in dropping three courses (Spanish 3, Elementary College Algebra, and AP European History) due to low enrollment, replacing them with virtual options or new sections like Psychology/Sociology. Wisconsin Reading Corps: The elementary school received a grant for a full-time reading tutor to provide high-impact literacy interventions for K-3 students. And in Academic Recognition at the end of Term 3, 88% of high school students and 71% of middle school students made the Honor Roll.

Spring mental health screenings were completed on March 30 with the results showing 13 students exited elevated/clinical levels since the fall, though 5 new students were added to those categories. In Reading Growth third-grade students showed significant progress, with only 5% remaining on Personal Reading Plans (PRPs) in the spring compared to 22% in the fall. In Climate, Culture & Fine Arts, in Forensics 30 out of 31 entries qualified for the State Competition which will be held on April 18.

And some key upcoming dates, on May 13th the MS/HS Band and Choir Spring Program and Awards will be held at 7:00 p.m., Senior Awards Night will be on May 27 at 6:00 p.m. On May 30 at 11:00 a.m. is High School Commencement, and the last day of school is June 4th with an 11:00 a.m. release.

In her Superintendent Report, Oberfoell noted that their co-op managers, M3, successfully negotiated a 0% increase for the next four years with Delta for Vision Insurance through June 30, 2030. Delta Dental increases were projected to be over 10%. Last week, the co-op released an option for 7% for two years. She said Both agreements were accepted and are grateful for their continued partnership in the co-op to help small schools collaborate and negotiate cost/premiums as a larger group.

In Facilities, roof repairs on the old and new buildings, were completed last week and the core control panel for the sound system needs to be replaced before end-of-year NHS and graduation events.

And in an effort to keep the community better informed, she noted the district has made great improvements in communication over the past few years, improving social media content and purchasing two pages in each issue of the Barneveld Shopper for approximately $3600/year ($300/month). For community members who reside outside of the Shopper area and those who do not have social media, the district has added an online newsletter, accessible from the school website, to recap the past month’s news and highlights. Community members should look for “The Eagle Experience” on the school’s webpage or call the school office to have the link emailed.

In other Approvals, Approved the Board of Canvassers Report for the 2026 Spring Election, the 2026 Spring Election Results, certified the Board Members Oath of Office conducted for Nick Meyer and David Moyer, Approved changing the time of the May 13, 2026, Regular School Board Meeting to 5:30 p.m. due to the MS/HS Spring Concert, and Approved a letter of Intent from Kinder- Care with the Barneveld School District.

In Staffing, Approved was adding Game Managers for Baseball and Softball Home Events – They currently have Game Managers for volleyball and basketball to represent the school district and support the officials, provide student/spectator management, and responsible for school responses to safety and security incidents. Game Managers for Baseball and Softball will be paid $40 per game.

The Second Reading of EDGAR Policy Updates and the Second Reading of Policy Updates 35.1 were Approved. The First Reading of Policy Updates 34.1 were Approved and will be added to the May agenda.

At the start of the meeting the minutes from March 11, 2026, were Approved, as were the March receipts and expenditures.
