What can you say …. 174-0!

That’s the record that Dodgeville’s four-time state wrestling champ Haakon Peterson turned in over his fouryear high school career.

Peterson was the lone champion for the Dodgers, but 120 lb. junior Shane Rochon finished as runner-up and 144 lb.senior Nathan Johnson took fourth.

It was Rochon’s third trip to state while Johnson was making his second appearance. Rochon won in 2024 and took second last year. Johnson was 5th last year.

This all took place at the WIAA Individual Wrestling State Champion ships last week. at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Dodgeville coach Ryan Lord wasproud of each of his wrestlers saying: “We had a great State Tournament this past weekend with Haakon claiming his 4th State Title, Shane placing 2nd and Nathan placing 4th.

“What Haakon accomplished is absolutely amazing! He became only the 4th wrestler in Wisconsin history to go undefeated with a 174-0 record. What’s even more impressive is that he did this while only giving up two reversals in his whole high school career. He gave his opponents escapes in order to score more takedowns, but the only other points he gave up were two reversalsno takedowns, no near fall & no penalty points against him throughout his high school career. The amount of self analysis and consistent improvement he makes is truly amazing and I know that trend is going to continue at the University of Michigan and beyond. He is also a 4.0 student and, most importantly, remains an extremely humble & great kid.

“Shane also had an amazing tournament & made it to the State Finals for the 3rd year in a row. Shane had a 15-1 major decision in the quarter finals followed by a 2:19 tech fall in the semi finals. In the finals we once again squared off against Evansville’s Kolten Bollig. Shane had a close match against Kolten at Sectionals & we felt good about a rematch. Kolten came out on fire in the finals & we just weren’t able to close the gap this time. Shane really had a great year overcoming an early knee injury. I don’t think he ever got to the point where he was completely pain free and 100%, but he did a great job of rehabbing and made one heck of a run to the State finals.

“Nathan also had a great tournament. Nathan opened the tournament with a 10-2 major decision over Espen Pitts of Mauston. I feel as though any Mauston opponent at the end of the season is a tough draw. The Mauston kids are always at their best at the end of the season, but Nathan did a great job of controlling the match. In the quarter finals Nathan squared off against Landon Fick of Plymouth. Fick is an extremely talented and tough wrestler and Nathan wrestled an outstanding match and came away with a 7-4 win. In the semi-finals Nathan faced defending State Champ and number one seed Ethan Immel of Kewaskum. Nathan again wrestled an outstanding match and battled Immel to the end. Nathan ended up losing 5-4, but he wrestled great against a kid who ended up being a 2 time State Champ. After being so close to making the State Finals, I don’t think Nathan was able to wrestle with the same emotion in his 3rd place match and he wrapped up his Dodger wrestling career with a 4th place finish. I know Nathan was a bit disappointed, but he had an amazing season and career. A 4th place finish and the way he wrestled at State is pretty impressive. Even more impressive is that he is a three sport athlete who also excels at football and baseball.”

Mineral Point wrestlers had some tough luck at the Individual State Championships, but brought home some medals.

Liam Carey led the medal parade taking second at 126 lbs.

Sophomore Trigg Riley took third at 106 and junior Jacob Dannenberg was fifth at 165.

Sixth places went to 113 lb. sophomore Memphis Burkhalter and 157 lb. junior Emmett Collins.

Mineral Point coach Curtis Fiedler was proud of everyone’s effort over the weekend.

“We always want more, but overall we were able to get 6 of our 9 wrestlers on the podium, and we were competing in every match. Was really proud of the effort from all of our wrestlers this weekend. We battled all weekend and I know our kids are never satisfied and always want more, which I know they have the ability to take that and use it for this upcoming weekend for team state. But overall, I couldn’t be prouder of this group of young men and women at the Kohl Center.”

Iowa-Grant/Highland wrestlers brought home two gold medals from state wrestling with 106 lb. sophomore Griffin Wineski gaining the first one. The second one went to 175 lb. junior Brock Hindeerman.

Jaxon Busse, a 165 lb.senior took runner-up honors at that weight.

Iowa-Grant/Highland coach Ryan Allen talked about his wrestlers that included one girl.

“It was a great weekend for IGH wrestling. Getting 6 athletes to state, and then 3 finalists, and 2 champions is really special. But what amazes me the most, is the support from all of our small communities. To see so many people with IGH shirts on and all the people screaming in the stands supporting these wrestlers is so awesome. The wrestlers felt that support this weekend and really laid it all out there on the mat.

“Griffin has really had a phenomenal season. It was a rough start at 120lbs but he worked his butt off and dropped to 106 and it paid off big time for him. The amount of work he put in this year really made losing hard to come by for him. I’m not sure but I don’t think he gave up an offensive point all weekend. I’m very proud of him and the way he wrestled this weekend.

“Brock got it done this weekend as well, and pretty much dominated all weekend. I’m very proud of Brock and I think it was only a matter of time until his hard work paid off for him. He has been doing this for a long time and the sky’s the limit for him as he is only a junior. Brock is a great leader on our team and next year should be a lot of fun for him.

“Jaxon is a stud and although he lost in the finals he is still one the best IGH wrestlers of all time. I’m very proud of Jaxon and how he represented IGH wrestling the last 4 years. We all will miss his leadership and work ethic next year.

“Trapper had a great season and although he didn’t place at state, I think he gained valuable mat time in the Kohl Center. As a freshman he went 2-2 and was very close to winning both of them. He’ll be back there soon and I think he’ll be one to watch for next year.

“Ty had a great season. He didn’t end up on the podium but still wrestled well out there and didn’t hold anything back. He is a great kid and a hard worker and I know he’s already planning off season workouts and preparing for a return trip next year. He will be a big piece of the puzzle for our team next year and I’m looking forward to watching him work hard as a leader.

“Rohwen Aultman is the first girl IGH has ever had make it to state and she is a perfect representative of what IGH wrestling is all about. She is a hard worker who hates losing and is willing to do what it takes to win. She went 2-2 at state and battled nose to nose with some of the state’s best girls. She is tough and I think getting a taste of the state tournament will only motivate her more. She is an inspiration to younger girls and I couldn’t be more proud of her.”

Mineral Point senior Dealya Colllins lost in the semifinals and then finished fifth at 132, but ended her career as a Pointer on the podium.

Sophomore Tatum James, making her first trip to state, had a tough first-round draw and then lost to a familiar foe in Iowa-Grant/Highland’s Rohwen Aultman.

Pointer coach Scott Pittz said about this two wrestlers:

“It was a tough draw for Tatum ending up with 4x state champ Taylor Whiting in the first round, makes it really hard to get any momentum your first time at the state tournament. I’m really proud of her turning it on at the end of the year, and having some impressive wins down the stretch to make qualify for the state tournament. She didn’t get the result she wanted this year, but I know she will put in the work this off season to improve that result next year!

“As for Dealya, I couldn’t be more proud of how she battled back after a tough loss and finished her high school career with a couple of dominant wins. I could fill up a couple pages talking about everything she has done for me, for this program, and the sport of girls wrestling over the past several years. I know she would’ve liked to end her career on top of that podium. Win or lose She always competed like a champion, and will continue do great things on and off the mat in college. She represented Mineral Point with pride, it will always be a highlight of my coaching career getting to be in her corner over the last 4 years.”

Pecatonica/Argyle senior Lukas Orloff was denied a state championship in his 132 lb. final 7-4.

He was state runner up last year at 113.

Pec/Argyle coach Grant Sutter had this to say about the tourney:

“Hard to believe that the season has come and gone just like that. It has been a heck of a ride with this team of the boys and girls that make up Pec/Argyle wrestling. We have come a long ways since this time last year, and plan to keep on the positive trajectory we’re headed on.

“Regarding the state tournament and how our individuals faired through the weekend, I’ve got a lot of mixed emotions. With Charlie Krebs and Layton Gruenenfelder both being freshmen making their first appearances at the Kohl Center, it was a great learning experience for them. What they learned over the weekend will be very vital in future preparations as they continue through high school wrestling. I felt both boys wrestled well on Thursday night, but just did t have enough to keep them on the championship side of the bracket. They needed a good start Friday morning to keep their hopes for a medal alive. Unfortunately, they both came out a little flat that morning and saw their tournament and season come to an end in the consolation bracket.

“As for Lukas Orloff, I want to start out by stating, what an incredible career from that young man. Surely one of the best to ever come through this program. As good of a wrestler he has been, he’s been an even better person through it all.

“What happened to him Saturday night felt like a grave injustice to wrestling. The better wrestler of that match was not declared the winner. In my opinion, the referee of that

match interjected himself in such a drastic way that it affected the final outcome. Lukas did everything right to come out as the winner of the match, however the referee’s calls saw otherwise. It’s been a tough pill to swallow as I know how hard this kid has worked to achieve that goal. We talk a lot about controlling the controllables and that’s exactly what he did through the entire tournament. It was the uncontrollables that took the state title out of his hands. I’m not trying to be bitter over this situation, but I also feel the need to stand up for what I think is right for that young man, that has meant so much to this program and everybody around it.

“This sport builds character, and unfortunately that match will be a big character builder in a way we didn’t want it to be. I believe Lukas will grow from this in the future on the mat as well as off the mat. I bet he makes a great coach one day, as it’s been similar character building matches I’ve endured, that have helped me as a coach.

“Until next year, we’ll stay ready!”
