Along The Ad Routes

by Mike Reilly

I saw something on FACEBOOK the other day. I was once a golfer. As a matter of fact I was on Dodgeville High School’s very first golf team - in 1962. We only had two freshmen in 1961 (myself and another Mike - Mike Collins) and we wanted to have a team, but back then you had to have five to have golf as a sanctioned WIAA sport. The next year several freshmen came in who wanted to play golf so we had more than enough for a team, even some JV players! Anyway I saw something that came from Bobby Jones, a professional golfer from many years ago. He said, “Golf is a game that only played on a 5’5” course. That’s the amount of space between your ears!”

We need more chefs that want to make grilled cheese specialties for the April 25th Wisconsin Grilled Cheese Championships that will be held right here in Dodgeville - at Harris Park, inside of Ley Pavilion. The number of entries depict how many VIP tickets that can be sold. There’s a lot of work and cost to make this event happen. Please volunteer your time for some of it and if you can cook, that’d be great! I can’t cook, but I have been a part of it since it was moved to Dodgeville and it is a great day with a lot of fun for the entire family. It starts at 11:00 a.m. and goes until 4:00 p.m.

Another event happening that same day is the Annual Dodgeville Garage Sales throughout the entire community. People can sign up for it at the Dodgeville Chronicle to be placed on the map and can also run an ad in our paper!

Our Saturday morning breakfast had to be a short trip, so we stayed in Dodgeville. We went to the north eastside of town to Cafe by Country Kitchen (I still say Country Kitchen!). Potsie stopped at the office because I forgot to tell him where we were meeting. So he and I rode together. Terry, Royce and Tom were already there when we arrived about 7:20 and Bob straggled in last, but was pretty much on time at 7:30. Just call her “some Jo” name waited on us. Her name is Amy Jo, but I’ve called her Mary Jo, Jo Jo, and just Jo! She wasn’t really smiling much when we came in, but we changed that in a hurry! “Cafe Favorite” was the breakfast choice by everyone except me I opted for the Country Favorite Skillet. I finished my big plate full and even took down another piece of bacon and 1/2 piece of toast. I must’ve been hungry!

While we were eating a surprise guest stopped by to talk. It was former Iowa County Sheriff  Tom DeVoss, who is also currently an Alderman for the city. I hadn’t seen him in a while, but this was the second time this week I had run into him!

With the temperature in the 60s and 70s over the weekend, we don’t have a hint of snow around at this time. But remember, it’s March and it came in like a “Lamb”! And the last day of March (31st) is also Dodgeville’s home opener for high school baseball!

In looking ahead of the projected weather forecast, it’s supposed to be warm (50s) but there is rain in the air on the 31st and the next two days!

It’s less than 2 months before the “Cruizn the Courthouse” opener - formerly Cars ‘n Coffee. Remember it’s now the 2nd Thursday of the month through October and not the 2nd Saturday! It will now run from 5:00 p.m. until dusk.

Today, Thursday, March 26 is National Spinach Day. I know many people turn their noses up at spinach, but it’s very healthy for you. National Spinach Day is celebrated annually on March 26th to honor the nutrient-dense leafy green, highlighting its health benefits such as high iron, fiber, and vitamins A, C, and K. It promotes adding spinach to diets through salads, smoothies, and cooking, often associated with Popeye the Sailor Man. But it’s not just Popeye who will be strong to the finish on National Spinach Day. In fact, anyone who chooses to celebrate the day by consuming some of this leafy green plant will get to join in on the health benefits as well!
