Thank you Dodgeville police
Dear Editor,
Every Saturday morning, local people from all walks of life gather peacefully in front of the Iowa County Courthouse. We memorialize the innocent Americans murdered by ICE, hold handmade signs protesting the illegal actions by our President, express our displeasure about the direction of our country, and gain strength from sharing our opinions with like-minded area residents. We play music, wave the flag, sing and, above all else, we are peaceful and well behaved.
The vast majority of the drivers and pedestrians who pass by give supportive waves, honks or thumbs-up. Unfortunately, there have been several young men in pickup trucks who have intentionally harassed and threatened our peaceful gatherings. To protect us, the Dodgeville Police have parked near our gatherings and pulled over the drivers of those pickup trucks and set them straight.
We greatly appreciate the Dodgeville Police protecting us while we exercise our First Amendment Right to gather peacefully and express our displeasure with what is happening in, and to, our country. With the recent fear and distrust of police caused by the violent, illegal and partisan actions of ICE, it's comforting to know that our local Police officers have our backs and are here to protect ALL of us.
We are very lucky to have the Dodgeville Police protecting ALL citizens and our rights. The same compliment has also been well earned by our County Sheriff's department who have been equally supportive and protective when we have gathered outside the City.
Thank you,
Susan Van Sicklen
Town of Dodgeville
