Cushman, Ronald Joseph

MOUNT HOREB - Ronald Joseph Cushman, age 84, of Mount Horeb, Wis., passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Sunday, January 25, 2026. He was born on November 20, 1941, in Dodgeville, Wis., the son of Vurl and Ruth (Ryan) Cushman.

Ron graduated from Barneveld High School in 1959. He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Sandra May Swenson, on May 14, 1960.

Ron served on the Mount Horeb Volunteer Fire Department & EMS for 13 years. He was on the first Mount Horeb EMS call in 1976. Ron later became the Assistant Fire Chief and enjoyed weekends filled with “water fights.” In 1983, Ron started his own business, RC Builders Inc., which he ran for over 25 years.

Ron played Ridgeway Home Talent and fastpitch softball for many years. He was an avid sports fan, his favorite teams being the ones his children and grandchildren were on. Ron enjoyed spending his spare time outdoors, fishing on the Mississippi River and hunting at his cabin in Ridgeway, Wis. He took several trips out west to hunt elk, later becoming a lifetime member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Ron and Sandra enjoyed traveling and spent winters at their home in Arizona.

While Ron may not have liked being the center of attention, he deserves to have his long years of love honored. He was a man of such integrity and generosity, and he left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. One of Ron’s greatest joys was spending time with his family. He was our rock, which perfectly complimented his wife, Sandra, who is our glue.

Dad/Grandpa/Great-Grandpa, you will be missed immensely. You were our comfort when we needed clarity and our sanity in this crazy world. It is because of you we have our work ethic, competitive nature, and knowledge of what it feels like to be loved unconditionally.

Ronald is survived by his wife, Sandra; children, Sheryl (Kym) Kalscheur, Kristi Cushman and Douglas Cushman; grandchildren, Nick (Nicole) Esser, Whitney (Brian) Johnson, Kourtney (Rich Hunt) Kalscheur, Kurt Kalscheur, Ashley (Brett Garst) Cushman, Brandon (Alli) Cushman and Taylor (Mitch) Flora; and great-grandchildren, Connor Esser, Sophie Esser, Madalynn Hunt, Cason Cushman, Jennings Cushman, Grady Garst and Baby Girl Flora (June).  He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Cushman; parents, Vurl and Ruth Cushman; sister, Marion Cushman; and brothers, Donald Cushman, Harold Cushman and Eldon Cushman.

A visitation was held at GUNDERSON CAMACHO MOUNT HOREB FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 500 N. Eighth St., Mount Horeb, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, February 2, 2026.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be donated by the family to the Mount Horeb Fire Department, Agrace HospiceCare and Parkinson's Research, in memory of Ron Cushman. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
