Steve M. Simmons, age 52, of Mifflin, Wisconsin, passed away unexpectedly on January 20, 2026, after a brief illness.
Born May 5, 1973, Steve was the son of Mike and Eva Simmons. Steve spent a short time in his childhood living in Delmar, Iowa, before moving to Mifflin, Wisconsin, where he grew up.
Steve dedicated the last 28 years of his life as a proud and committed member of the Mineral Point Rescue Squad, where serving his community was not just a duty, but his calling. Though he worked many jobs over the years, none were as important to him as making ambulance calls and being there when people needed help most. There was never a time Steve didn't have his pager with him and radio on, just in case. Steve inspired a passion for emergency medical services in countless others through his teaching, guidance, patience, and by living his passion every single day.
Outside of service, Steve loved the outdoors. He enjoyed photography, fishing, camping, and hunting, his favorite being pheasant hunting with his dogs, Molly and Harper, and he spent as much time in South Dakota as possible. He also devoted many years as a Wisconsin DNR Hunter Education instructor, sharing both his knowledge and respect for the outdoors and for safe, responsible recreation. For many years Steve was also an avid competitor in archery, IDPA, and, more recently, NRL22 competitions.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Alex; his brother, Spencer (Jami) Temperly; his sister, Sherry (Dave) Caplan; and his mother, Eva (Glen) Esser. He was preceded in death by his father, Mike, and his brother, Scott.
Services will be held privately with family, with a celebration of life to be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Mineral Point Rescue Squad, in honor of Steve's lifelong dedication to emergency service and community care.
