Belleville’s free throw success helps down Dodgers

Belleville senior Toria DeVoe lead the Wildcats attack when they hosted Dodgeville in a non-conference girls basketball game last Tuesday....and then some.

DeVoe, whose father Dan was a standout athlete at Dodgeville took his alma mater to pieces with a 37 point performance that included 16 of 18 made free throws. She was perfect on all 10 second half attempts, helping clinch the 58-47 win when the Dodgers had to foul.

DeVoe put in 19 points the first half as the Wildcats worked their way to a 27-19 lead. She followed with 18 to ice the win.

DeVoe was also deadly from deep, burying five three pointers.

The Dodgers tried to answer with a 19 point night from junior Abilene Bartz. Emma Dougherty also scored doubles with 10, all in the second half, in an attempt to keep the Dodgers within striking distance.

Once again it was a slow start that caused the Dodgers to go into chase mode according to coach Alan Seabrooke.

“We gave ourselves a chance tonight, but couldn't get the score under six points in the second half,” said Seabrooke.

“Belleville did a great job making free throws, especially down the stretch when we were fouling,” he continued.  “Our deficit goes back to the start of the game though.  We got a basket right away, but then still only had two points with nine minutes remaining in the first half, yet we were only down 9-2. From that point on, we basically played them even.”

“We need to figure out how to start the game faster offensively,” Seabrooke said. “We have only had one game that we came out making shots right away, and that was game one against Evansville.”
