Sen. Marklein, Rep. Novak: End Gerrymandering
Dear Editor,
Wisconsinites want to end gerrymandering. Will our legislators listen? Over 82% of Americans want redistricting done by an independent commission rather than politicians, according to an NBC News poll.
The League of Women Voters Redistricting Committee and Wisconsin Fair Maps Coalition have drafted a proposal for an Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) that would put map-drawing power in the hands of citizen commissioners instead of politicians. The proposed IRC was tailored to Wisconsin’s specific needs and with feedback from Wisconsinites across the state, as the Committee and Coalition held over 20 community hearings to get input from the public.
At this point we have fair voting maps that accurately represent Wisconsin as a purple, competitive state. But we need legislation for an IRC to ensure that after the 2030 Census, Wisconsin doesn’t end up gerrymandered by the party in power. That’s why we need legislation to establish an IRC for drawing Wisconsin state legislative and congressional voting districts in the future.
