Pointers lead girls Sectional qualifiers, Dodgers, IGH, Pec/Argyle also advance some

Mineral Point qualified 8 of 10 girls for Sectional competition next week as the result of the Regional held on the Pointer mats Friday night.

All the teams listed along with those from the Waunakee Regional wrestle Sectionals at 4:00 Friday on the Mineral Point home mats with the top two in each weight division heading to state.

Pointer coach Scott Pittz was happy with the tournament.

“We had another great showing this weekend! This group continues to improve every week, and are starting to see the payoff of their hard work and resilience of a long season!

“Even with senior Ella Wilson falling just short of her goal, I cannot give her enough credit for how she helped the team this year. Returning to the mat for the first time since her 8th grade year, battling injuries early in the season and bumping up 2 weight classes. She wrestled her heart out to the last second of her last match, ending in an overtime win for 3rd.

“Also, I could not be more impressed with freshman, Rachel Hiesner’s growth in her first full season ending with a winning record, and battling back from a concussion that kept her out for month in the heart of the season. If she can improve as much as she did this year over the next 3 years, she is going to be a force on this team the rest of her career!

“For all those moving on to next week, I feel very good about how they’ve been wrestling and would expect to see many of them making noise at the state tournament in two weeks!”

Dodgeville coach Ryan Walmer talked about the three girls who wrestled.

“We had 3 girls wrestling on Friday night at Regionals. They all wrestled well. We finished 4th out of 8 as a team.

“Mya had one opponent in her bracket and dominated the match to score a pin in the third period.

“Chloe had 3 other wrestlers in her bracket including 2 tough freshman. She lost one match then scored a pin to have a chance at a wrestleback but didn’t get the right outcome in the championship match. She finished 3rd.

“Jenna had 4 opponents in her bracket. She capitalized on a couple byes and got a quick pin in the semifinals. She finished the night in 2nd place.

“With the top two place winners moving on to sectionals, we will have 2 wrestlers in action on Friday the 20th in Mineral Point looking to earn a spot at the state tournament.”
