Dodgeville schools need a “Yes” vote

Dear Editor,

My name is Corley Jewell, and I was part of the 2023 graduating class. Looking back on my 14 years in the Dodgeville School District, I see more than classrooms; I see the foundation that shaped who I am. From elementary school on, I was given opportunities to explore, grow, and discover what made me who I am. At DES, a simple invitation to audition for The Sound of Music led to being cast as Gretel, a moment that gave me confidence, belonging, and a love for the stage that still impacts my life today.

In middle school, supportive mentors created an environment where students felt safe to try new things, step outside their comfort zones, and get involved. That encouragement helped me grow not just academically, but as a person. I learned the value of community, leadership, and giving back. These lessons don't come from a textbook but shape who students become.

By high school, I realized I was more than grades and test scores. The ability to take electives and participate in activities that matched my interests changed my future. Courses like Anatomy & Physiology, Psychology, and Exploring Education helped me discover my passion to pursue a career in Speech-Language Pathology. Those opportunities, all of which are outside the core curriculum, are what connect learning to real futures. Once I determined my passions, I dedicated the rest of my time in high school to doing what I love and building a legacy within the district that has helped me keep pursuing higher education.

Schools are more than buildings. They are where confidence is built, passions are discovered, and futures begin. When students have access to diverse classes, activities, arts, and supportive staff, they don't just get an education; they gain direction, purpose, and belief in themselves.

These opportunities shaped my life, and every student deserves the same chance to discover who they are and who they can become. Please support the Dodgeville schools and vote yes to pass this referendum.

Sincerely,

Corley Jewell
