Cool Hand Luke

Dear Editor,

I am very impressed with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Football Coach, Luke Fickell, not for his coaching ability, but his negotiating ability. "Cool Hand Luke" convinced the obtuse leaders at the University that after only two seasons and a 13/13 record that he deserved a contract extension. The Badgers lost their last five games in 2024. The Badgers missed a bowl appearance for the first time in over two decades in 2024. Yet, an extension was approved with a $27 Million Buyout. If he's fired, that amount of the buyout figure would rank as the second-highest in college football history

Quotes from UW President and Harvard Educated Jay Rothman: (6/8/23) "I am absolutely committed to ensuring that UW System takes a hard look at all of our expenses, ensuring that we are responsible stewards of taxpayer and tuition dollars. All options are and must be on the table." 

Mr. Rothman, {approving/green lighting/allowing} this type of compensation goes against his 6/8/2023 comments? One could suggest that Mr. Rothman says one thing and does another with tax payer's money. 

Chris McIntosh (UW-Athletic Director) was groomed by Barry Alvarez to be his successor. That is where the problem lies. Coach Alvarez is overrated!  In 16 seasons as Coach, Alvarez's Big Ten record was only 65-60-3 (.502%)  In nine seasons, he only won 4 or less Big Ten games during nine seasons. Won three Big Ten Championships during 16 seasons. For only three seasons of meaningful success, Alvarez has a Field named after him and a life size statue of himself?

It's time to stop drinking the UW Football Program's Cool Aid.
