We received a couple of notes with renewals to our papers last week. The first came from long time subscriber Rosalie May. She said, “Hi everyone. Please renew my Dodgeville Chronicle for 1 year. I am early so please give me the extra 4 weeks. I sure look forward to it Thursday for your great paper and the Democrat Tribune as well. Dick and I subscribed to both when we married in 1964 and have done so ever since. Kudos to your staff and keep up the great job!! Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend. Weather sounds good for the Iowa County Fair and all events in the area. I hope to get out to some of them.”
The second one came from Marsha Biddick. She said, “Enclosed is a check for $52 for a one-year subscription which will expire 8-31-25. I have read the Chronicle my entire life, so I hate to give it up. We did not receive our issues in June/July until weeks after we should have. I worked with Grant and Heather, who worked with the post office staff so I am hoping the problem has been rectified. Last week’s paper came on time on Friday. So, I’m hoping the problems have been solved.”

It was time for my annual Wellness Checkup, so that took place last Thursday at Dr. Jodi McGraw’s Upland Hills Health Clinic in Barneveld. I go way back with the McGraw family! Besides Jodi, I had Molly learning the ropes from her, Anna asking questions and drawing blood plus Kayleigh working on my ear. It was fun meeting all of them. They took care of me very well!

It was Iowa County Fair time, so that meant our Saturday morning breakfast would be in Mineral Point. We had been to the Pointer not that long ago, so Tom DeMuth suggested that we go to the Red Rooster. It was Bob, Terry, me, Tom and Royce meeting at the Chronicle by 7:30 to head out. Actually, we were all there by 7:20 so we headed out then. I had to drive myself as I was heading to the fair around 9:00, so Terry rode with me. Bob took Tom and Royce. I followed Bob! Dave Stone was back from his west coast windsurfing and golfing trip, so he was going to meet us there at 8:00. We were really early, so we ordered our coffees, water and orange juice and talked until Dave arrived before ordering our food. Helen (Hinderman) was our waitress. She said she even remembered waiting on us years ago at the old Dodgeville Truck Stop. I remembered her there too, with her sister Katrina! We made it way too easy on her with our orders because four of us had apple bread French toast and the other two had quiche! And she didn’t mix any of the orders up!

I figured I had better go to the “little boy’s room” before heading out to the fair. When I was walking back to it I spotted a familiar face sitting in a booth. It was my cousin Cathy (Reilly) Schleicher. She grew up in Lancaster. We had a little catching up to do, so I didn’t get to leave to head to the fair as soon as I wanted to - which was OK. All I really missed was the heifer show.

One of the best thing about going to the fair each year - it’s only been70+ years! - is seeing people from the past that you only see now and then!

It’s September and now the kids are back in school! That means a different day-to-day routine for many parents as well as some businesses!

The Dodgeville Area Scholarship Foundation golf outing and fundraiser is set for Sunday, September 21 at Dodge Point Country Club. That’s a great day to stop out and renew some old acquaintances even if you don’t play golf!

Today is a special day - it’s National Newspaper Carrier Day. I never delivered papers for money collected by me, but each week I take papers to grocery stores, C-stores and a couple of other places in Dodgeville on Wednesdays. We also deliver to the west - Linden, Cobb, Livingston, Montfort and Highland along with to the north and east to Mineral Point, Hollandale, Blanchardville and Argyle. The rest go to the post office on Wednesday to be delivered by lettercarriers. Here’s why National Newspaper Day was created - National Newspaper Carrier Day on September 4th recognizes the dedicated newspaper carriers who deliver the news in the wee hours of the morning. None of us deliver in the wee hours of the morning!
