Oppose bringing National Guard to our cities

Dear Editor,

The Trump Administration’s efforts to bring the National Guard to American cities must be vehemently opposed.  His statement to hundreds of our military leaders that we should use American cities as “training grounds” for military personnel is frightening.  This is just one of the latest and seemingly daily examples of Trump’s unhinged efforts to unravel our democracy.

I urge us all to look deeply at the ways that authoritarianism can take hold, and to be part of the No Kings Rallies and other efforts to protect all of our citizens, not just Trump’s wealthy pals. I am nearly 80 and have never witnessed anything as terrifying as this, in terms of a threat to our country.  And that includes the horrors of McCarthyism. I hope to see neighbors and friends, regardless of political affiliation, taking part in the No Kings Rally in Dodgeville on October 18th, and engaging in other public efforts to speak out in the name of justice. We must not be silenced.
