Along The Ad Routes

by Mike Reilly

We received a couple of notes with renewals of the paper last week. One came from Allen Pincus of Barneveld. He said, “Thanks for keeping the paper going!” The other one came from Carolyn (Stude) Novotny. She said, “Enclosed is my check for the renewal of my subscription. Always enjoy reading the news of my hometown. Keep up the good work!”

It’ s always gratifying to hear from our subscribes. It’s them and our advertisers are what keep the papers going!

I saw a little tidbit posted the other day that brought back memories about when I was a youngster watching baseball on TV and at the ball park. It was about one of my favorite Milwaukee Braves players, left-handed pitcher Warren Spahn. I may not have these facts right, but one year he won something like 24 games and had 27 complete games! But, what I saw was that he won 363 games as a Milwaukee Braves pitcher, four as a New York Mets player and three as a Giants (not sure if was New York or San Francisco) player. He was also a pretty good hitter. The oddity is that he had 363 hits as a Milwaukee Brave, four hits as a Met and three as a Giant!

Saturday morning breakfast couldn’t be too far away from home because Terry and Tom had signed up as Lions members to work at the “Sleep in Heavenly Peace” bed build, it’s first one as a group. It was held at Mueller Implement from 10:00-1:00. So it was Bob, Terry, Tom, Potsie, Royce and me heading to Stroz Inn a little to the south in Hollandale. We met Dave Whitford there and he joined us at our table even though he had already eaten. Jen, the owner, was right there when we got there. We hadn’t seen her in quite some time because she had either worked really late the night before and had someone else fill in the kitchen work or she was just way too busy in the kitchen to even come out and say hi. Ashley was our waitress, taking our orders and bringing us coffee, orange juice and Dr. Pepper (for Potsie). Bob couldn’t make it through his full order of biscuits & gravy and for the first time I left a few of my American fries (with cheese and onions). I even didn’t eat my toast - that was a first. I usually clean up my entire plate, but this time I couldn’t and I even didn’t eat supper the night before!

Saturday afternoon was a family affair. Brother Pat and I went to Platteville to watch grandson/great-nephew Quentin Keene quarterback the UW-Oshkosh Titans football team when they played UW-Platteville at Pioneer Stadium. It was kind of cool for the tailgate Party before the game and at the game. It was hosted by Kelly and Bret Keene, Quentin’s parents with Kelly being my niece. Their other two kids Jade and Taylor were there as were niece Amy and her kids Emma and Reilly - also niece Shelly with her kids Danielle and Grant. Then Quentin’s girlfriend Morgan and her mother and father were there plus other relatives and friends from their family and Brett’s too. Nephew Ryan and his wife Lauri both came to the game. Platteville won 21-14. But Quentin threw a long touchdown pass! He’s a senior at Oshkosh with his college football career coming to a close in a couple of games. We’re hoping he will be part of next year’s Dodgeville Home Talent Baseball Team though!

I’m jumping from Thursday to Friday (November 7) as my special day. It’s one that is familiar to me and “oldsters” like me, but probably not even heard of by youngsters. Friday is “Sadie Hawkins Day”. Sadie Hawkins Day is an American folk event where women traditionally ask men for dates or to a dance. It originated from a Li'l Abner comic strip in 1937, where an unmarried woman would chase bachelors to marry them. Back in my school days we held “Sadie Hawkins” dances. Those were the times I used to hide! At those dances, the girls asked the guys to dance. It was a lot of fun. Now I only hide on “Leap Year Day”!
