ICSD issues scam warning-jury duty

The Iowa County Sheriff's Office is issuing an urgent warning to the community regarding a recent wave of fraudulent scam attempts reported by local residents.

In these incidents, scammers claim that the target has failed to report for jury duty and now has an active arrest warrant issued in their name. These criminals often present what appear to be convincing fraudulent documents and may even use caller ID spoofing software to make it seem as though the calls are coming directly from the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office.

The scammers then attempt to pressure the victim into avoiding arrest by paying a so-called “fine” — typically just under $10,000 — using untraceable payment kiosks or other nontraditional methods. They often present the situation as urgent and confidential, discouraging the victim from verifying the information or contacting others for guidance.

Let us be absolutely clear:

• The Iowa County Sheriff’s Office will never demand payment or threaten arrest over the phone.

• We will never instruct anyone to deposit money via a kiosk, wire transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency.

• We will never attempt to collect fines to prevent arrest.

This is a scam — one designed to exploit fear and confusion. If you receive such a call or message:

• Do not provide any personal or financial information.

• Hang up immediately.

• Call the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office directly at 608-930-9500 to verify.

We encourage residents to talk with family members — especially seniors — about these types of scams and to report any suspicious contacts. Vigilance and awareness are our strongest tools in preventing fraud.
