Dodgers win in five over Panthers
Dodgeville’s softball team took a 13-0 non-conference win over Iowa-Grant Friday.
An eight run fourth ended the game in five. Ava Lord and Lily Wiegel pitched the shutout which ended up to be a one-hitter.
The Dodgers started early. Kayla Brom reached on an error and scored on an error for a 1-0 Dodgeville lead in the top of the second. Olivia Forsyth, who had reached on an error, came in to score on a single by Wiegel.
Brienna Wasley singled in the top of the third and scored on a double by Rylee Forsyth. Emma Dougherty walked and she and Rylee scored when a fly ball by Brom was dropped. That gave the Dodgers a 5-0 lead.
The Dodgers then plated eight runs in the top of the fourth to put the 10 run rule in effect.
Wiegel walked to get things started and scored on a double by Ava Lord. Vanessa James singled and she and Lord scored on a single by Wasley. Brom then doubled in Dougherty and Wasley after Dougherty was hit by a pitch. Brom scored on an error and Tommi Crubaugh scored on a sac fly by Olivia Forsyth.
James was 2x3 and Wasley 2x4. Wiegel, Brom, Rylee Forsyth and Lord all had one hit.
Lord was the winning pitcher, giving up a single to Ava Klaas for the lone Panther hit. She struck out three in four innings. Wiegel came in to strike out the side in the fifth.
Lakyn Holman went three in the circle for the Panthers and Quinn Hoeper went two. Holman registered the lone strikeout.
Dodger coach Gene Van Dyck talked about the game.
“Well, a dominating victory against a pretty good team. In our 5 at bats, we collected 11 hits and 11 earned runs. As with the Platteville game, their outfielders brought 2 potential home runs back into the park but we also had 2 other balls hit the top of the fence and stay in the park. Where was the wind that we'd had all year when it could have helped us? Just a puff of wind from the west and we would have had 4 homers. Kayla Brom continued to pound the ball joined by 8 of the 9 players with hits including 3 players with multiple hits and 5 players with extra base hits. We've raised our team batting average to .324 as all 9 of our players are now hitting. Ava threw a dominating 4 innings limiting IG no runs and only 1 hit with no walks. Only 2 balls left the infield, a fly out to left and a single. Lily Weigel pitched the 5th, facing only 4 batters with 3 strikeouts and a walk.”
