Hugill, Joanne Irene (Meuer)

Joanne Irene (Meuer) Hugill, 88, of Livingston, Wisconsin, passed away on May 1, 2025, at Upland Hills Hospital in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, surrounded by her loving family.

Joanne was born February 23, 1937, in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, the daughter of Norbert and Dora (Francis) Meuer. She graduated from Dodgeville High School in 1955, then worked as a nurse's aide at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Dodgeville and Madison General Hospital. She and Richard "Dick" Duane Hugill were married on February 15, 1958, at Saint Mary's Church in Mineral Point, Wisconsin.

Following marriage, Joanne began working on the Hugill family farm south of Cobb and spent decades contributing to the success of the farm with her care for the animals and family. She attended Saint Thomas Church in Montfort, Wisconsin. Her faith called her to serve her community. She was a member of the Lioness Club of Cobb for 32 years, serving one term as president, and was a poll worker in Mifflin Township for many years. Additionally, Joanne regularly donated blood through the American Red Cross.

Travel and spending time with family were important to Joanne. She and Dick visited Hawai'i and Alaska. They enjoyed attending Badger sporting events with her sister Vicky and her husband Merle. The four of them went to the 1999 Rose Bowl and attended many Badger football away games, and were also season ticket holders for Badger football and women's basketball. Family members from both sides of the family came to the farm to celebrate Christmas and New Year's.

Joanne had a special connection with all animals, and the animals loved her in return. It was only a matter of time before a stray cat started eating out of her hand. She taught her family how to care for animals with kindness and patience, though no one was as good at it as she was. Joanne could know a calf was sick before the calf knew.

Joanne is survived by her children, Mark (Barb), Gregg, Donald (Amy), and Kathy; her siblings Donald (Carol) Meuer, Billy (Lois) Meuer, June (Jim) Paynter, and Vicky Nadler; her grandchildren Rachel Stewart, Sarah Hugill, Brad (Hannah) Hugill, Daniel Hugill, Allison (Jesse) Landy,  Brian Hugill, Matthew (Natalie) Hugill, Megan Hugill, Brady Hugill, Alex Gross, and Owen Blum; her great-grandchildren Ian Stewart, Asher Landy, Ari Landy, and Everett Hugill. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including Jerry (Jan) James.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dick Hugill, brother James, brothers and sisters-in-law Bill and Dorothy Holman, and Norbert, Jr. and Jo Anne Meuer, brother-in-law Merle Nadler, daughter-in-law Lynn (Boda) Hugill, and grandson-in-law Lee Stewart.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Dodgeville.
