Martin, William R. (Bill)

William R. Martin (Bill), age 72, passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday March 22, 2025 at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau.  He suffered a heart attack, leaving behind a void that will be deeply felt.

Bill was born on December 9, 1952 in Dodgeville to William R. (Ralph) Martin and Sally (Smart) Martin.  Bill graduated from Dodgeville High School in 1971.  Bill found unwavering strength and companionship in Mary Sheets, his devoted partner, who stood by his side through life's joys and challenges. They built their life together in Phelps, Wisconsin, sharing it with his beloved canine companion, Duke.

From the time he could push a mower and shovel snow, Bill was forging his own path, setting the stage for a lifetime of self-employment.  A truly versatile flooring specialist, Bill combined hands-on installation mastery with great business sense, demonstrated through his ownership of Martin Floor Covering (Dodgeville) and management of flooring stores, catering to both residential and commercial clients.

An avid outdoorsman, Bill's love of hunting and fishing provided him with countless cherished memories and a deep connection to the natural world.  Northern Wisconsin was a place where he truly felt at home.  He occasionally enjoyed a good cigar and, in his retirement, Bill discovered a passion for confectionery, particularly at Christmas. He delighted in sharing his homemade candies, gifting generous bundles to friends and family, spreading sweetness and joy.

Bill is survived by his children Eric Martin (Kassandra Sauter) of Sauk City, Aaron (Kristin) Martin of Minneapolis, Drew (Erin) Martin, Wendy (Andrew) Martin of Minneapolis, and Sean Martin of Minneapolis.  Bill also had eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.  Bill is also survived by his siblings Laura (Gary) Cisler of Mineral Point, Todd (Julie) Martin of Dodgeville and David (Rebecca) Martin of Madison.  He was preceded in death by granddaughter Grace Martin and his parents Ralph and Sally Martin.

The family is planning a gathering to honor Bill and will be announced at a later date. Bill's life, with a gentle reflection of his heart as a father, friend, and brother, will forever illuminate our memories.
