Old school again

by J. Patrick Reilly

People tell me I am “old school.”

They no doubt got the “old” part right.  But I have a good memory.

I remember the Al Bauman wrestling coaching days when Mineral Point was one of the top teams if not the top wrestling team in the state.  That was when the state champion came out of the state tournament.

Next came the Scott Schmitz years when the WIAA and wrestling coaches decided to move to a “Team State Championship” event.

Now it is the Curtis Fiedler program and the Pointers are the top team in their division in team state.

Last weekend they won it all at the UW-Fieldhouse.  The Pointers are back on top.

Happy for you Curtis, staff and team.

Over the past 50 plus years of covering area sports I have had the priviledge of covering Barneveld girls basketball during the Jim Myers era.  Jim left the girls program for the boys, then retired for 10 years.

But now he is Back!!!

And with him is his magic.  In his first year of returning, the Golden Eagles are back at the state tournament.

The thing about Jim is he runs his program with a high dose of class.  If the Eagles never won a game they would still be great to cover because of the class Jim brings to the program and the game.

As someone said recently, “He is the best.”

And now the entire state can see it again.
