No better time than now

I ran across an article in the Wisconsin State Journal, Madison’s newspaper, this week that had a list of Division 1 college baseball teams that are bound for Omaha and the college World Series.

I didn’t look at it as I knew that UW-Madison would not be included.  The UW athletic department cut baseball in 1991 because of a severe financial crunch.  Since then they have worked out of it but never brought back the popular sport they cut.

The sad thing is all the other teams in the Big 10 or the Big whatever the number is now all have baseball. So does UW-Eau Claire and UW-River Falls who cut baseball the same time but have since brought it back.

There is money available to help bring it back. The Madison Dug Out Club has a healthy stash and would gladly contribute to help with the cost.

But the plea to bring it back falls on deaf ears.  It seems more important to give funding to football then watch the program lose the top state prospects to other schools.

There is no sense debating the programs the UW offers as that would not be fair to the athletes lucky enough to compete.  The debate should be doing what is right.

The Mallards have proven there is a fan base for baseball in the area with 5-6000 people attending games to watch college talent.

Madison College has shown it is one of the top junior college two year programs in the nation.  So why not the UW?

It is time to bring  the great sport of baseball back.
