Hanson, Marvin L.



Marvin L. Hanson, age 92, of Mineral Point, passed into God’s care on Monday, July 14, 2025 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born November 5, 1932, to Albert and Bessie Hanson, he was the ninth of ten children. Marv graduated from Mineral Point High School in 1950, earned a bachelor’s degree from UW Platteville, and a Master’s degree in Applied Science from Montana State University. He married the love of his life Phyllis Owens on December 28, 1952 and joined the Air Force in 1953, serving in Korea and Japan.

After his military service, Marv taught in Fond du Lac, Platteville, and later became the middle school principal and business manager in Mineral Point, retiring in 1991. He also worked at Lands’ End for 13 years and served 6 years on the school board. Active in community life, Marv was involved with the Order of the Eastern Star, Masonic Lodge, Lions Club, and the Zor Shrine Camel Patrol. In April 2016 he and his son DuWayne participated in the Badger Honor flight.

Marv was a member of the United Church of Christ, singing in the choir with his family and serving as a member of the church council for many years.

Throughout his career, Marv was dedicated to education, touching countless lives as both a teacher and administrator. He was known for his ability to connect with students and staff, always striving to create a positive and productive learning environment. Colleagues remember him as a principled leader who remained deeply invested in the welfare and development of his students and staff.

Outside of work, Marv’s commitment extended into civic and charitable activities. Friends and neighbors recall his warm sense of humor and unwavering generosity; he often went out of his way to support those around him, whether it was through church events, club fundraisers, or simply lending a hand when needed. His involvement with various organizations reflected his belief in service and his passion for bringing people together.

Family was central to Marv’s life. He forged strong, loving bonds with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, celebrating milestones and simple moments alike. The annual trips to the north woods of Wisconsin were a highlight, filled with laughter, stories, and memories that will be treasured for generations.

Marv is survived by his children Marla Martin, Lisa Hanson Howard (Warren) and DuWayne Hanson; his grandchildren Lesley Davidson-Dahm (Matthew), Owen Martin, Ethan Martin, Cole Howard, Emma Hanson; his great-granddaughters Lily and Eleanor Davidson; his sister-in-law Marilyn Owens; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis, his parents, his son-in-law Tim Martin, his brother-in-law Wayne Owens, and his siblings Curt, Rueben, Raymond, Al, Grace, Edna, Gladys, Annebelle, Norma, and their spouses.

His legacy of strong principles, dedication, and service lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. Marv's presence, wisdom, and love will be greatly missed.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. at the CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST in Mineral Point. Military Graveside Services will be in Graceland Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:30 a.m. at the church.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the incredible staff of Sienna Crest Assisted Living and Agrace Hospice for the exemplary compassion and kindness shown to him at all times. Additionally, they would like to thank Dr. Fox and all the doctors and nurses at Upland Hills for the wonderful care he received.
